So the other day I get a nice new machine with 4.5 TB of space so I can start making full system backups and as there's no optical drive I try to install windows from a USB stick but the setup process hangs every time, before it even gets to the disk partitioning screen. I've left that for now as in the process I had to disconnect my USB keyboard from my main computer to use temporarily to try and set up the backup server. Since plugging it back into the main one, Windows 7 no longer detects it. It works in the BIOS and if I dual-boot to XP but not in Windows 7. I got in eventually using an old PS/2 keyboard to find it listed under device manager as a USB hub (I know it's that as when I disconnect the keyboard the icon disappears) and right-clicking to troubleshoot it just says it can't find drivers. Reinstalled the logitech G19 software without any luck so against my better judgment (as it's never fixed any problems when I've tried it before) I gave system restore a try, restoring to the last snapshot before I had disconnected the keyboard. After that ran and I restarted, my main profile no longer works, it just logs me in using a temporary one each time. I've tried a ton of things to try to fix this without any luck including getting rid of the .bak extension in the registry, resetting refcount and state to 0 etc but it still won't let me log on using it. One thing I didn't try was the advice here http://pcsplace.com/windows7/how-to-fix-corrupt-user-profile-in-windows-7/[^] which claims "when any of a user profile in Windows 7 gets corrupted, then fixing it so very easy" before giving instructions on how to delete all of my data. So I guess (unless anyone reading this has any suggestions I've not already tried for fixing the profile) I'm down to creating a new one and gradually migrating all of my files, registry settings, files from app data / local settings etc across, something I'm not relishing.... :sigh:
