Cheers. What version? Can you do a screenshot? Looks OK in FF3.6 on Windows and Ubuntu for me.

I've quit my job! I'm going to start by contracting and try and build my own company. I've got 1 month to finalise the details and find my first project (although I do have a few leads already). Wish me luck. [Going freelance blog post[^].]

Ah-ha. Dam widescreen monitors. Looks like I need to increase the size of the corner image to cater for even larger screens. Thanks for the tip off.

I've always wanted to have my own company. Ultimately I want to build a product/app that I can sell, so I suppose contracting is just a route to get the freedom to get to that final goal.

Simon, I suspect you may have made a mistake if this is a major goal, while you are a FTE you have all evenings and weekends to work on this, they are about to disappear (assuming you have some luck and you get the work you want). Are you going contracting or consulting, the difference is the level of responsibility you have to the outcome. I much prefer contacting it is so like an FTE with limited moral commitment to the company. Either way - good luck with it!

It's not so much a major goal, just one way I see the long term panning out. (To point to one very famous example - FogBugz was built as an internal tool while they were a consulting company. I'm not saying that's a goal, just one possible future if everything went outstandingly well) Contracting is probably where I'll start, but I see more scope for company growth in consulting. I would like the opportunity to hire a team to work on projects with me and I don't see that happening as a contractor who is just like a temporary employee. Ultimately though I'll do what's successful. If things fail I'll change direction. I'm not solidly committed to one particular route.

I make more and work less. The trick is most people charge what they think they "deserve" as an annual salary / 2080. You will never make it consulting on that pittance. Charge what it takes to make a living and be a success. Contractor Rate Calculator[^]

Thanks for the tips. I've seen your rate calculator before actually, it's pretty cool. Although I notice you use US 1099 tax in your calculations, but the values are in £. Is that just silverlight auto localising it on my PC? A reverse mode would be cool; enter the rate and it calculates equivalent salary.

If this is even remotely likely make sure you are willing to become a manger/entrepreneur and are willing to give up being a coder. Running even a medium sized team is a full time job, there is no time left over for the fun bits (design and coding). This is the primary reason I gave up being a consultant, I'm a lousy manager.

It loaded in dollars for me, so it must be cleverish localization. Only -ish since without also swapping tax codes the change is more potentially deceptive than anything else IMO.

I use the built in .NET localization because it makes it easier to parse in user input strings. Some people in other parts of the world use their commas wrong and since Microsoft wrote the code I might as well use it. If I actually understood any other countries tax codes I might have implemented them but the U.S. tax code is hard enough as it is. We are only taxed to die and work, from what I hear the U.K. has a tax just to live :) With regard to the reverse mode, it makes it too easy for the other side to come in and without assumptions claim a rate is too high.

If you hover on the ? it does indicate 1099 which is a U.S. tax code, so hopefully it is clear that I am not attempting to deceive anyone. I suppose I code disable that checkbox for non-U.S. visitors but that is just plain mean.

Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. I also do Android Programming as I find it a refreshing break from the MS. "And they, since they Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs" -- Robert Frost

I've quit my job! I'm going to start by contracting and try and build my own company. I've got 1 month to finalise the details and find my first project (although I do have a few leads already). Wish me luck. [Going freelance blog post[^].]
