WMP, am i guilty??

OK, who here plays music?? Hands up, come on don't be shy. Right i use WMP to play music, and i have just got a telling off from dave, who is right??? Am i guilty of a crime, of using WMP which automatically loads and runs when i pop my little friend "MR cd" into the drive, or should i be going to Start | Run | cdplayer to play my music, as suggested Also am i not allowed to "use" my cd's in the drive incase i wear them out?? Apparently i must "rip" them to save the cd from becomming, and i quote "they scratch and blur" here is a snippit (a short snippit!!) of the conversation: Dave Wulff says: I have three words for you Peter: "Windows CD Player" Dave Wulff says: why the hell are you bothering to run Media Player to play CDs? Peter Mayhew -> Entrepreneur says: er to hear music Dave Wulff says: it s just not worth it for that Peter Mayhew -> Entrepreneur says: right so i'm suppose to run something else then am i! Dave Wulff says: yes, Windows CD Player Dave Wulff says: that is what it is designed for Dave Wulff says: Media Player on the other hand is not designed to play CDs, it si designed for as an electronic music centre Peter Mayhew -> Entrepreneur says: what is the big deal, i pop my cd into the drive, and it gets automatically played, why bother going Start | Run | cdplayer Dave Wulff says: there is no big deal, other than you are using a pressure hose to wipe your arse when you should be using toilet tissue Dave Wulff says: WMP is a system hog, you shouldn't run it unless you need it's features Dave Wulff says: Windows CD Player uses far less resources and is much better suited for... you'll never guess Peter Mayhew -> Entrepreneur says: lol you should see my other programs dave, WMP is a tame little animal no offence dave, you are great, but this conversation must be judged by the people at CP --- Peter M

To summarise for other people who didn't get the whole conversation leading up to my arguments mentioned above, Peter basically drags the CD tracks from his PC into WMP to play them, rather than using playlists, albums, etc, else he just sticks in the CD to play it and, presumably, needs to keep swapping them in and out to get the good tracks out of all the fillers. He then complains about not being able to see the track titles. I argued for ages about the benefits of ripping them properly through WMP and using playlists and ratings, but gave up in the end and suggested he just use CD Player as it would be (at least I think it would be) better suited for his needs. CD Player is much quicker from my experience in loading and playing a CD that going through Media Player each time. In fact I have never published a conversation before and I agree I should have asked you first, but i did tell you straight after i did this, and said i would remove this thread if you wished, so i did my best to resolve it once i realised my error. I just now and again pop the cd in my home oc, and let windows run WMP for me. Yes sometimes i play some oldies, which is in MP3 in my music folder, and drag the MP3's into WMP,so it quickly get the list of songs and plays them, which is very rare. AHHHH!!! It has nothing to do with the CD drive and everything to do with the general dirt that makes its way onto the CDs when out of their cases, sitting on top of the computer or hi-fi, etc, etc. Small scratches turn into bigger scratches, tiny smudges of god-knows-what appear on the surface, and before long your CD will start skipping bits here and there.

I rip nearly all my CDs, as they're just so much easier to deal with that way. But i'll still occasionally play CDs in my PC, and certainly play them in my stereo. As for cdplayer, it's nothing special; i don't mind it on systems where it's the default autoplayer for music CDs, but i wouldn't go out of my way to run it. In fact, both WMP and WinAMP provide more functionality than cdplayer. Shog9 ------

I use WMP to pay my music (which is already on my computer), i don't bother with CDs b/c they don't last long (music) and its better to use WMP9. Although I hate that it takes soo much resources (I have to give msdev.exe a higher priority just to get work done) -Steven

It looks like I'm the only person out there who actually uses WinAMP for playing MP3s/CDs.:wtf::wtf: I have WMP9, but it.....well...it sucks (IMHO of course). :runs before the lynch mob arrives: That's why I ramble so much. I still use Winamp as well (good old 2.8 too). It's simple, has playlists and I've found a cool little program that let me set hotkeys for the standard functions. I can't stand WMP. It's big and bloated and all the 'features' I don't like can't be turned off.

I rip about 90% of my CD's. I don't like lugging CD's around. I bought an in dash MP3 player (uses CD-R's) from Aiwa. Now I have about 10 CD's in my car instead of 100. Also, when I want to update one I just toss it and re-create since I keep them all stored on my machine. I probably use Winamp more than WMP but that's a toss up these days. They went too far with Winamp3. Once upon a time Winamp3 used small resources and started up very quickly. Now it takes as long as WMP and is about as big and when it comes to usability, WMP is easier. So, there you go. (David Wulff is right here, btw. For your needs, the basic CD Player would be faster... and all you'd have to do is associate CD's with it and you'd never have to hit Start Run again...)
