I've just received an email, which looks like obvious scam, but not like any other kind I've encountered: Regarding your software management on Brothersoft.com Dear redacted, I am Amy from BrotherSoft.com Customer Service Department. As you know Brothersoft.com is one of the Internet's top three most popular software download sites. It receives over 70,000,000 daily visitors and 30,000,000 daily downloads worldwide and maintains a powerful presence in non-English-speaking markets. Our corporate relations network spans the world's leading multi-national companies and supports us in our mission to become the world's largest comprehensive provider of software downloads. Many users suggest our editor to post your software on our site for sharing them because your software is so excellent and friendly to use. Brothersoft.com contacted your company about it before, but we hadn't receive your reply. And now we had listed your software on our site to meet the need of our users'. On the other hand, we also provide your company with an excellent free platform to publicize your production. Your company detailed information can be found on the software page including your software name, your company name, URL, etc. The user will purchase from you if the software isn't freeware. You are kindly to invited to join us as a software supplier. And now our editor had registered an author account for you(redacted). Please refer the following link to set your password and activate your account. http://author.brothersoft.com/?act=Register.reg\_confirm&redacted If you could tell us about your IM contact way(MSN or Skype) to us and then we will add you to our list and you could contact us any time conveniently. For the purpose that our team can serve you better. We look forward to your reply. Sincerely yours, Amy BrotherSoft.com Customer Service Email: redacted@brothersoft.com Are they really thinking that this can fool developers? I think aiming developers for an Internet scam is a stupid idea, or maybe I'm wrong?

If the subject line said that I can download bunch of software for free I'd delete in a heartbeat, but it said it's about management of MY software on their website which got me curious.

It sounds to me like a sleazy attempt to disguise their theft of your articles to sell on their site as a legitimate activity. Have you checked to see if any of your work is being sold on their site?

Not sure my example is a scam, but I got a couple of calls the other day from people purporting to be headhunters, both of which had rather thick Indian accents. I had the following discussion with the first one; with the second, I prefaced call with, "if you're going to ask for my SSN, we can end the call right now." So, there was a little bit of communication difficulty, but we got through it. He had a lead on a contract for AT&T here in Denver. I asked him for the address (to see if it was a commute I'd be willing to make), and sure enough, that seemed to be an AT&T facility. So, we talked a little while, and at the end of it, he said that AT&T requires a unique identifier to put my application into their system, and he'd need my SSN for that purpose. Let's see, some random phone caller needs my SSN. Sure, let me get right back to you with that. I inquired into his mental state and we ended the phone call. Of course, I have no evidence this isn't a legitimate lead, but as I pointed out, the only thing they need my SSN for is to take taxes out of my paycheck once I started working for them.

Yeah, I did a few searches, and they yielded no results... so far so good I guess.
