      Article states:

the facility to record users' positions was added with the iOS4 software update

Suckers! I'm still on the older version of the software. I wonder if the purpose could be something innocent. For example, maybe they cached the most recent 10 locations to estimate a trajectory in the mapping software. And maybe they just never clean out the cache. Still, would be nice if this "feature" could be disabled.

Actually, in the recent article about the iPhone apps that were using audio, it also mentioned that some apps were using video as well. At least, I think it said something about that.

I just looked at it (with the application they provided), and it's not very precise, it does not pin-point my home, my work place or anywhere sensitive. I seems to be marking cell "towers" or sometihng like that, and show dots of various colors (red or grey) of different sizes, but they don't seem to represent some patterns known to me; I would have assumed it marked around my house, but no. Some dots are way far from where I am or ever was. for me, no biggie. but still, I am curious.

                        Watched code never compiles.

maybe the size has to do with distance from the tower by measuring signal strength ... or how much time has elapsed since the tower was used by the cell ... which could be used to sort of track your movements ... I suppose I should go back and read the original article :sigh:
