Nooo! If you do that, they'll know that you have something to hide. Then it's "Go directly to Gitmo!"

"The proposed new Form DS-5513 asks for all addresses since birth..." So I would already be lost at their first question :-)

The US government wants to make it harder to flee the country when the other shoe drops. Yeah, I know how paranoid that sounds but I really cannot think of any other explanation. When my passport expires in a few years, it looks like I won't be able to renew: I do not have that kind of detailed information and very likely will never be able to get it.

I think this probably describes what it is they want to do:

This is Big Brother stuff --- they are setting up a series of roadblocks to use "just in case" they want to deny someone a passport. The question is, who and why? Basically, this will potentially deny US citizens the ability to travel outside the country. It may not be a wall, but it functions pretty effectively as one if they want it to.

I'm guessing that renewals won't be a problem and getting one for the first time probably won't require this form for most people. Just the suspicious "other" of the moment. Like looking like a mooslim.

If you don't need a passport to go to Canada or Mexico then you don't need a passport anyway. There's just three countries on this earth : USA, Canada and Mexico. Then, there's a lot of water. If you cross the waters and reach the edges of the flat pancake shaped planet you might fall off into space and die. So why would you need a passport ?

Let me guess, death of Schengen? Yeah, its unfortunately necessary since the frontier countries have a massive responsibility in keeping out unwanteds, and sometimes arent as good as we would hope thus exposing the west to all kinds of riff raff we dont want. Of course this isnt going to change things much. It will just allow the countries to selectively stop cars full of dodgy looking Albanians on their way to Holland. --edit-- Opps! :) Completely wrong, nothing to do with Schengen. And yes, it could be sinister! :)

I believe you do now need a passport for Canada and Mexico. But I do take your point. Something like 75% of Americans don't have a passport and, as a country, we're woefully incurious about the rest of the world.
