well... not that i'm defending ubuntu (i actually rather dislike what it has become) but i think the problem is the wireless card manufacturers don't make the reqd info available to the linux people to write the drivers ... blaming linux for that is silly

I agree. You can't blame Linux for that, but it makes Linux not nearly as attractive for use on laptops, especially because the wireless drivers that *do* exist are written for specific NIC chip sets.

agreed ... in the big picture people don't care *why* it doesn't work ... just that it doesn't personally i have had no problems in this dept whatsoever ... in fact i have a laptop that cannot run the wireless under windows but can under linux ... weird i know and i was shocked that windows couldn't see it but it can happen i guess afaik it must be either a *very* new chipset or something *very* obscure for linux not to work with it

Many times, new == obscure evaluates to true. :)

My experience has been that Ubuntu installs older hardware and most (but not all) new hardware without a problem. When it does not install new hardware it can be a big problem because the driver probably does not exist yet. Windows is the opposite; it installs new hardware but usually has trouble with older hardware. Finding an old driver that works with the latest versions of Windows can be equally troubling. There may not be one.

I can't remember the name, but I know there is a project which allows you to install and run Windows network drivers on Linux.

So far, no one seems to have cracked this!
