Hmm... Like John, most of my friends and neighbors aren't like that. I think they would give a good account of themselves. Given that my next door neighbor is a combat veteran, our chances are better than a lot of folks.

In most cases things will be all over before anybody even got the time to figure out what just happened. Yesterday I read about Osama's impressive record of bombings at military bases and ambassies. All those were guarded by armed and trained soldiers. Despite that, most of the incidents succeeded and many people were killed. The terrorist usually blew himself up, so what chances do you see for yourself and some neighbors in the unlikely event that you happen to be at the wrong place at the right time? And then what? Who are you going to shoot at?

I really don't understand why people are so worked up over Bin Laden getting killed. Yes, I'm glad they nailed him, but in the end, nothing changes - for anyone. The terrorists are still out there and even more determined than ever to wreak havoc, and we are still out here making targets of ourselves. While people are out there celebrating, the terrorists are still doing their jobs. The price of libery is paid through eternal vigilance and the ability to act. My advice remains the same - arm yourselves. EDIT =========== I am also of the opinion that it's time for us to leave Afghanistan and Iraq. We did what we said we were there to do, and it's time to widthdraw.

I really think the triumphalism over this makes folk much more likely to become targets of retaliatory attacks - it would have been safer to let the news leak slowly. But I guess there may be less votes in that.

Yes - because that's obviously what "we" were in Iraq for, nothing to do with controlling oil.

I have no illusions about my ability to successfully defend me and mine, especially against armed invaders. I'm an almost 50 year-old yutz who works a desk and hasn't been target shooting in ten years. I figure at best I can delay the bad guys a few seconds. My original point is that I trust my friends and neighbors to at least try to help defend us. I'm going to give them those few seconds.

delete this;I have lived in Texas long enough to at least understand why people think that way. And I have had enough years of military service to know what my chances are in some situations. But does living in a country where most people never have seen any weapons except perhaps on police officers and never really see the need to have any appear so alien to you?
