Vegetable peelings, tomato stalks, egg shells, you know the kind of thing! I was also brought up not to waste food, and our "compostable" bin holds maybe a couple of pounds a week. Not enough for us to compost it, but the council does, so...

I have to work on Monday since my home base is in Scotland. However, since I'm seconded to one of our other offices in England, which does have the holiday, I don't have to travel down on Monday - yay! For business reasons the Scottish banks are shut on Monday in Scotland but businesses are open are usual. The situation is more complicated than just the fact that we get different bank holidays[^] - public holidays are different according to where you work. So I work in Fife and get different days off from my neighbours who work in Edinburgh

I shall be going to The Bower[^] where everyone in Lichfield gets drunk and then has a big fight, although I hope to be home before most of the fighting starts. They've been doing it for about 800 years now.

When they build an extension, generally - the local houses are made of two-foot thick "riverstone" which is a major pain to cut, drill or anything else. Even putting up a picture needs SDS drills and (preferably) diamond tips. So indoor plumbing mostly waited until they build an extension, and put teh kitchen and bathroom in that. That way you didn't need to make any more holes in these walls... Most of the local houses also open direct to the street, with no front gardens. Since many of these only have rear access through the house, there was a lot of resistance to Wheelie bins as they have to be pulled through the house to get to where the binmen can get at them. Hence the late arrival!

Why is this not mentioned in the biographies of Erasmus Darwin and Samuel Johnson? I was working just down the road in Wolverhampton some 15 years back. Had I but known, I could have gone to The Lichfield Bower instead of taking the scenic tour of Walsall. (What a Bank Holiday that was!)

 I had to do much the same in a Grade 2 Listed in London a long time ago: replace the old cable with new flood wired CAT5. The best bits were the boss setting off the fire alarms with his pipe, and later drilling straight through a skirting only to find the mains cable behind it, and his beloved son wrecking two pairs of cable shears to cut a 20 foot length of network co-ax out, only to find it was the armoured fibreoptic cable bringing 400 telephone lines into the building...

That's two Wednesdays and one Tuesday. I'm still short of a full house.

Mine are Thursday - Brown (garden / kitchen waste) and Blue (recycling) alternating with Black (everything else).

I'll give them this: Mercury noticed before it was reported, and had a team there to fix it in less than half an hour. On a Saturday... Impressive level of service!
