Looks like Northern Ireland is starting again...

Police have come under attack as political leaders try to find a way to end the spiralling levels of street violence in Northern Ireland. [^] Aparently they used petrol bombs abd fireworks against the police acording to news I heard today. I really find it quite pathetic that in the modern western world we live in the kind of sheer ignorance and bigotedness necessary to carry out these kinds of acts still exists. Why dont they just grow up and stop acting like twats.

Yes, unfortunately many 'grown ups' have an emotional age of about 10.

Bigotry? :) Do you really believe that this is a Catholic versus Protestant issue? The struggle is to remove the last vestige of British Imperial power from Ireland. That most Irish Nationalists are Catholic and most British Unionists are Protestant is due entirely to Britain's past policies. The Nationalists now see a democratic return of the 6 counties to the Irish Republic within their grasp, the Unionists see themselves as the threatened minority. It should be no surprise that the violence continues.

It is supposed to be, yet I feel it is often just angry young men venting.

Its often the Protestants being aggressive, and in fact, this is hoew it started in the 60s prior to the British Army getting involved. They went over there first to protect Catholics.

They have their own government combining both the south and the north of ireland. Jts how much angst can they feel towards the UK? Actually an Irish guy I knew put it very well. He said the almost cessation of hostilities in the late 1990's was due entirely to the ecconomic boom in Ireland. After all, how many angry young men can you find to plant bombs, kill people etc, when they all have BMW 3 series, jobs, houses, and enjoy two foreigh hiolidays a year? :) And after the credit crisis, and Ireland is completely fucked, witha debt of 60 billion euros (and a population of 4 million), what are we seeing? An increase in tension.

And why? Because Unionists would not enjoy their 'top dog' status in a united Ireland. That is why the Nationalist (Catholics, if you must) Civil Rights protestors were being attacked in the 1960s. Any concessions were seen as 'giving in' to Nationalist demands. I was opposed to British troops being sent to Northern Ireland. My opinion (based on in-depth research of the Irish in several North London public houses :)) was that British Troops on Irish Soil would re-vitalize a moribund IRA. My then MP, Anthony Berry, disagreed with this assessment in a letter of reply, he sought to comfort me with platitudes. After all, the troops were there to protect Catholic families. (He later died in the IRA's 'Get Thatcher' bombing of the Grand Hotel, Brighton. Ironic, what?)

Which would reduce support from the Republic to that of the ideologues.

You do not need that many, and there are sufficient ideologues. "The British continue to claim sovereignty over part of our country and while that is the case armed struggle will always be justified." - Real IRA.

Northern Ireland remains one of the UK's most disadvantaged regions, not many were in the BMW 3 league.

In Northern Ireland, the collapse of the Republic's economy appears to have caused support for re-unification to fall to c15% (2010), having grown from c20% (1998) to c30% (2006). If re-unification appears unlikely via the ballot, the ideologue resorts to the bullet. As for the Republic's economy - default.

The Celtic Tiger? Dublin house prices equalling London? Easy credit? The term Mondeo Man was coined in the UK in the 80s to mean the average guy. By the 90s he had litterally become 'BMW 3 series man'. I wouldnt be surprised if the same happened in Ireland. Yes. Yes.

That was the Republic of Ireland. Although there was economic growth in Northern Ireland, it was not on the scale of the Republic. In 2005, the average GDP of the Republic (per person) was €35,725 in the South and East, and €23,637 in the North, Midlands, and West. The corresponding GDP of Northern Ireland was €19,603 per person - the third lowest in the UK. (North East England being the 2nd lowest, and Wales the lowest.)
