Recommendation for an external hard drive?

I just got a seagate home flex 2 tb network hard drive. I own three Western Digital MyBook Element (2GB) drives and am very happy with them. If you're looking for a beefier solution (at greater cost), I recommend the Drobo[^] family. Friends of mine swear by (not at) them. /ravi

Ironically I already own 3 500 GB Western Digitals, which are going strong for over 4 years. One of them made me nervous because it stopped working for a while, but now it works again. Don't really know why. My intention with the 2TB one is to consolidate all three and then I bounce into piece of crap software from Seagate

I power up my drives on demand (i.e. they're not always on) - I expect that will extend their life. I recommend replacing the multiple 500GB drives with a single newer one. I've always tried to buy the fattest drive I can afford. If I were you, I'd consider the WD MyBook Elements 3TB USB2/3[^]. At $130 it's a steal! /ravi

I do the same thing, on demand. That is why (I think) my 500 GB ones keep going. That was the whole point of the seagate. Thanks for the advice, maybe I will open a post "almost new seagate for sale, very little data transfered, will change for WD" hahaha

I bought this: ReadyNAS NV+[^] a few months back and filled it with these: Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green SATA300 64MB[^]. Appears to work very well. (Note that you really need to upgarde the internal memory on the NAS box for best performance).

I do my shopping user-ratings homework with the following pattern: I look up a drive's user-ratings on TigerDirect & NewEgg. Importantly, I don't only look at a 4 1/2 out of 5 ratings on its own, but check the ratio of high ratings vs. very low ratings. Often you'll note that 20% of the raters gave it a very bad rating because it was either DOA or crashed withing a few weeks. I've observed, for example, that no one seems to really make a reliable drive over 1 TB. A fraction of them work well, but far to large a fraction are either stillborn or go out soon after the user loads all of their data. If you can find one with a drive that's not made in China, you'll probably cut your risk significantly (but it cost money). Philosophy: Even for free, an unreliable Hard Drive is severely overpriced.
