A colouring book designed to teach young children about the September 11 terrorist attacks[^] Not so much that it is wrong, but do young kids have to be aware of it?

I think it is appalling. It ought to be entitled "The Children's Book of Freedom" Typical Americanism!

Why am I not surprised that "God" has to be in the book as well. My country still associates Freedom with God.

Just wait... If Rick "Jesus, take the wheel!" Perry or Michelle "God made me do it" Bachmann get elected, separation of church and state will be nothing but a memory.

Right now it seems like the US is stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea: the Democrats remaking the US in their image or the Republicans remaking the US in their image: Hobson's choice. Neither view is particularly appealing. Pity.

Looking at the state of the US from the outside, it seems that the politicians are so busy playing politics right now, they have lost sight of the fact that they are having an effect on the country and how it's being viewed by the markets. That's a real shame - I had hoped to move to the US one day.

Actually, it's not quite that bad... See, the Republicans can't get anything done anymore, because the Teabagger caucus is tying their arms behind their backs. Plus, they have all of these stupid pledges they signed (*cough*Norquist*cough*), which prevents them from making any real compromises. On the other side of the aisle, the Democrats seem to have neutered themselves, as lately they've been completely unable to stand up for any of their own issues. Their idea of compromise is, "Ok, we'll give you everything you want and more... So can we please pass something?" Kind of funny how the Dems keep taking flak for "Obamacare," which is really a Republican solution. "It would be a shame if the Democrats left office without having tried any Democratic policies." -- Bill Maher

I believe you can have dual citizenship (England/United States). If this is true then you can live one month in the U.S. and the other 11 months in England.

By the markets and other countries in general. This topic can and has been debated into the ground but our government has lost sight of the big picture. There are so many people in this country that don't want to see non-Christians in positions of power. The religion token is just one of many, many hot topics. I love my country and have fought for my country but I can't help but feel embarrassed and humiliated sometimes. -- Cheers.

You mean as in "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights"? That's a deliberate choice made by Jefferson - who was not enamored of religion in the slightest. Rights granted by governments are, by definition, rights that can be taken away. God's authority is a trump card and His granting of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" has been played as a trump card more than once. For instance, to end slavery. Of course, there are lots of folks who insist that all rights come from, and can be repealed by, the government. Here in the States, they are usually those who claim that democracy means that 50%+1 can pass any law, and do anything they wished. I've heard that argument made on the left and on the right, usually by folks who think there's just too damn much freedom (to bear arms or speak your mind, depending on who is arguing for fundamental change). Presumably these folks are perfectly okay with the idea that their life, liberty and property would be totally at the mercy of Barack Obama and John Boehner.

Have to be? No. Is the book being forced into these kids' hands? Are parents required to show it to their kids by some governmental authority? If so, this is a fundamental wrong and should be stamped out. If, on the other hand, if it a simply another book that is available because the U.S. has a free press and free speech is guaranteed by the law of the land, then I fail to see what concern it is to anyone. From what I could gather, the book tells the truth. It calls the Islamists who perpetrated 9/11 (and killed friends and co-workers of mine) hijackers and terrorists. It shows the United State exacting a very high price for 9/11. Parents who want their kids to understand what happened can give their kids the book. Parents who want to forgive and forget, or who simply believe their children are not old enough to be exposed to those truths, will keep the book away from their kids, and let them remain ignorant. Stupidity is a condition: ignorance is a choice and one that some people make, over and over again, but nonetheless, which is always correctable.

Doesn't necessarily mean a permanent move... Could go expat for a few years, until the country comes to its senses. The only trick is finding a programming job in Toronto.

                                    Exactly, just ask the Natives.

Doesn't necessarily mean a permanent move... Could go expat for a few years, until the country comes to its senses. The only trick is finding a programming job in Toronto.

If I wanted to, I probably could. My former boss, that hired me, left for a job there heading the IT department. I was just saying I'm sick of baseless threats to leave the country, I'd say .01% of those making the threat leave.

That's not necessarily religious. Everyone has a "creator"... Usually two of them... They're called parents. And those parents can be said to have gotten the rights from THEIR creators, and so on and so on. Isn't recursion fun?
