David Cameron hails new dawn for Libya as countries jockey for oil contracts [^] "If you arent nice to us, we will bomb you too" I guess is the message here. No wonder they two contries were so keen to get stuck in. Even the French hatred of arabs coudnt explain their enthusiasm! :) And after Libya, there is Syria to rape: The EU has agreed sanctions targeting Syrian oil exports, depriving the regime of a vital source of revenue as European countries buy 95 per cent of Syria’s crude oil. [^] Iraq, Libya, Syria... it is getting just like the 1920s all over again. The Sykes-Pico agreement coming back, in a somewhat different structure. :)

I'm astonished you find an issue with this, OF COURSE it is always about a commodity these days. Just be bloody thankful it is no longer religion with western countries although I can see that coming back into fashion. Can you seriously think the last 40 years where good for the people there.

That's a pathetic attempt to push some emotional buttons. What little I know of the Syrian regime it is not good for it's people or it's neighbours (I'm talking Lebanon not the Israelis).

I don't think the Syrians need worry. England and France, wrapped in the cloak of NATO, will be unable to start another oil grab without the 75% funding the U.S. has provided so far. I don't think even Obama would dare get involved in another war so soon.

Turns out that the US was handing Gaddafi duck his enemies whilst the UK was telling him about dissidents clickety.[^] My first thought was that this is sickening then the cynicism kicked in - absolute power etc.

Out of the bunch, Assad (both father and son) have been the worst. At my brother in law's wedding there was and old man who looked like he had advanced osteopyhrrosis (hunched back, heavu stoop). When we watched the wedding video she-who-must-be-obeyed piped up "there's my dad's friend, he spent time in a Syrian prison. They hung him by his wrists, behind his back, that's why he walks like that." His main crime, it transpired, was to write a poem critical of Assad senior. It is routine in Syria for people to "disappear" (even before the recent demonstrations) and it is well know such people are either killed, or tortured then killed. The families never know what happened, just that their son/father/whatever hasn't come back. The first time I came here one of my wife's cousins said "Don't worry, your safe here, the secret service might bring you in for questioning, but you won't be tortured or disappear like in Syria." Such is life in the Middle East.

Sort of a cross between Lawrence of Arabia and Dilbert.[^]

I wasn't talking about the UK, but surely you know some history behind the Contras, and how they were funded. Drug money has been used to fund covert ops in the past, why wouldn't it continue now?

So you think the US went to Afghanistan to take control of opium profits in order to fund its military interventions globally?

Yes, they have. The UK used to sell opium to the chinese, it came form Afghanistan. We even went to war with the chinese government to protect our market. Yep, Great Britain, the drug pusher. :) I dont think any government would undertake such an enterprise today though; the impact of it becomihng public knowledge would be too damaging. No?
