I don't visit too many of those forums at work. Although the owner of the company is a huge firearms fan, I'm not sure what the HR netnanny's will do. Outside of work, I have 3 classes and an internship so I barely have time to shit.

I always thought the $5mil toilet seat and the like was to recoup research expensis? If so, this has been researched. However, I doubt that's the case and since a contractor didn't build it themselves, they will want around $5-15k per each. I say let us nerds raise money, send it as a tax deductible donation, and get these rovers out there. Hell, send me the parts, I'll build it! For $500, go ahead and use the rover, just autograph and send me the destroyed body when it does go. I'll put that on a case on my desk. Or let us send some battle bots of our own. I've always wanted to put a sawed off shotgun on a Roomba, and call it "The Ankle Biter" See John, this is why I stay away from gun forums.

That is pretty cool and it didn't cost millions of dollars to develop. Just a lot to ship to them through Pakistan. It's funny how this stuff never seems to come up from the DOD so cheaply.

Look what happened to the drone planes. Start with a eye in the sky (off the shelf technology) and end up with a flying bomb. DOD is famous for ordering bacon and wanting eggs and toast with it. They once ordered a personnel carrier it was delivered, but then after addons it ended up being an underpowered tank. "Gee why doesn't it work?"

Sort of. I posted a summary of the seat/hammer recently in SB2.0[^]: Well you're arguably half-right anyway. The toilet seats were weird requirements, the hammers just a paperwork oddity. This story eventually ended with the congresscritters (who called the vendor in to explain itself in a hearing) praising the vendor for managing to meet such a complex set of requirements at as low of a cost as they did. Specifically that the fee the vendor is allowed to charge for selecting products was spread equally across all items instead of being weighted by cost. eg I'm hiring you as my personal shopper to buy me a $20 hammer and the best used car you can find for $19980; and provide documentation explaining your selection. For your services I'll pay you a 10% fee or $2000. In a normal world most people would look at this and conclude the 10% fee added $2 to the price of the hammer, and $1998 to the price of the car. In federal procurement land however the hammer cost $1020, and the car $20980. This is the sort of procurement contract (combined with epic fail PR/damage control) responsible for the hammer story. No idea if the procurement rules were ever changed afterwards to not look retarded.
