windows 8

Well, in the few hours I've been playing with it, I see several plus points. It boots on my VHD in just over 10 seconds and it has a much lower memory footprint. There are several areas where they still need to make it consistent, but it's fairly promising so far.

How did you get it on the VHD? Or did you get the 32 bit OS?

May I refer the honourable gentleman to the blog posting here[^]? I fiddled around following the steps here. I do know that VMWare doesn't work, but you can host it in a VirtualBox VM - but the Direct3D stuff doesn't work there.

How is the windows explorer ? Do they still have the Windows 7 style toolbars in it. Have they made it easier to copy files from folder to folder, hard disk to usb etc. I found that the most annoying aspect of Windows 7.... Or have they abolished the concept of files altogether ?

You wrong me comrade O'Hanlon. I know that you already heard about Metro. Almost everybody who read the newspaper today must have heard about it. I am just grumbling about them changing something again. I am sick to the back teeth of Windows 7 showing "burn to disk" everytime I open windows explorer. Do they think people spend their lives burning all files on the hard drive to disk ??? grrrrr!!! I am sure windows 8 will bring something even crappier.

I think you're missing the whole point with a new version.

Stuck on a new issue. The ISO is greater than the 4.7 GB limit of my DVD-Rs. How did you work around that?

Well I am strong supporter of progress as long as it is forwards. I wish someone would start a movement to write XP drivers for new hardware.

They are trying to foist some new UI called "Metro" on us
Gosh really? Wow, this must be a world exclusive as this is the first we've heard about it. You'd think somebody would have posted about this here in the Lounge. You must be sitting in Ballmer's office to hear about this. A new UI called Metro? It must be pronounced differently to the Metro UI on WP7.

Also, in order to use the Metro UI, you will need a digital certificate called a Metro ID. This ID authenticates you to the Service Registry v3.88, which replaces Windows Genuine Advantage. Just one bug they need to work out - for some reason the Metro ID's are becoming self-aware and are draining the life force from the Microsoft researchers! Perhaps they need to turn up the air conditioning; I hear those things are weakened by extreme cold!
