Just been reading about the windows 8 preview. They are trying to foist some new UI called "Metro" on us. By the time we get to Windows 10 the amount of control you have over what you can do with a computer will be severly limited. It will be almost like the old days of the dumb terminal and the main frame. I can imagine an interaction between windows 10 and a user Windows 10 : Hello buddy, please select one of the following options 1) i want to chat with my girlfriend 2) i want to watch dirty pictures 3) i want to post shite on facebook User : I want to install Apache, Eclipse and maybe VS 2010 if it will run on this computer. Windows 10 : What is Apache, Eclipse and VS2010 ? And what does "install" mean ?? What's all this shite ? Are you a developer or something ??? Now, fook off!!! or please select one of the following options 1) i want to chat with my girlfriend 2) i want to watch dirty pictures 3) i want to post shite on facebook

Gosh really? Wow, this must be a world exclusive as this is the first we've heard about it. You'd think somebody would have posted about this here in the Lounge. You must be sitting in Ballmer's office to hear about this. A new UI called Metro? It must be pronounced differently to the Metro UI on WP7.

You wrong me comrade O'Hanlon. I know that you already heard about Metro. Almost everybody who read the newspaper today must have heard about it. I am just grumbling about them changing something again. I am sick to the back teeth of Windows 7 showing "burn to disk" everytime I open windows explorer. Do they think people spend their lives burning all files on the hard drive to disk ??? grrrrr!!! I am sure windows 8 will bring something even crappier.

Well, in the few hours I've been playing with it, I see several plus points. It boots on my VHD in just over 10 seconds and it has a much lower memory footprint. There are several areas where they still need to make it consistent, but it's fairly promising so far.

May I refer the honourable gentleman to the blog posting here[^]? I fiddled around following the steps here. I do know that VMWare doesn't work, but you can host it in a VirtualBox VM - but the Direct3D stuff doesn't work there.

How is the windows explorer ? Do they still have the Windows 7 style toolbars in it. Have they made it easier to copy files from folder to folder, hard disk to usb etc. I found that the most annoying aspect of Windows 7.... Or have they abolished the concept of files altogether ?

Explorer has the ribbon interface. I haven't really had much time to play around with it yet, so I'll reserve judgement on file management until I've had more of a play.

I'll be buying one today. Thanks Pete.

                                  Regards, Nish

Gosh really? Wow, this must be a world exclusive as this is the first we've heard about it. You'd think somebody would have posted about this here in the Lounge. You must be sitting in Ballmer's office to hear about this. A new UI called Metro? It must be pronounced differently to the Metro UI on WP7.

Forgive your enemies - it messes with their heads

Also, in order to use the Metro UI, you will need a digital certificate called a Metro ID. This ID authenticates you to the Service Registry v3.88, which replaces Windows Genuine Advantage. Just one bug they need to work out - for some reason the Metro ID's are becoming self-aware and are draining the life force from the Microsoft researchers! Perhaps they need to turn up the air conditioning; I hear those things are weakened by extreme cold!
