I have been working for free for a non-profit local weekend school that teaches Chinese language (started 7 years ago). I develop and manage their websites, serve on the board, among other things. The principal in one of the six campuses tried to use school resource to do some improper things. I was vice chairman of the board at the time, I persuaded other board members in the campus to find a new principal, not reappointing him (his term ended this summar and needed to be reappointmented by the board). He took this badly and tried to get revenge on me. He demanded the board to investigate a list of my "wrong doings". While the board is investigating, he published my name and his charges against me to many enrolled families of the school and many other unrelated people via e-mail. Since the board promised him to complete the investigation in two weeks, his action serves no purpose other than damaging my reputation and disrupting my life. I reported his action to the board. However, since he has already been forced out of the school, I doubt the board will/can do anything to him. My question is, should I take legal action against him if he would not apologize and/or would not stop the harassment? Thanks.

Sue for defamation/slander, damages to your social and professional standing, distress and costs. Should be a nice little earner for you. Seriously, I would have his carcass in a court asap.

In the UK defamation laws are great for those wealthy enough to pursue the legal action. I expect it is much the same in the States. I doubt there is much you can do to stop him being an ass other than to shoot him.

Fire up the napalm Buba, it's time to fry! He is seriously out of line, take some legal advice and once the board clears your name get them involved too as he shouldn't be using school property [the e-mail list] for personal vendettas.

At the very least you should consult a lawyer, very often the first consultation is at no cost. I wish you luck.

The board could, of course, issue a rebuttal email to the enrolled families. I'd be very surprised of the school doesn't have associated legal representation - they will be able to advise you of the most suitable course of action.

I wouldn't do a thing. I have guns, and I'm the first person they would suspect if the guy had an unfortunate "hunting accident". If your reputation is solid, no amount of investigating is going to hurt you, and once found "innocent" of the charges, you can give an *opinion* that the guy that brought the charges is just angry because he was dismissed due to wrong-doing on his own part that resulted in his termination. It's important that you precede your statement with the words, "In my opinion" to avoid any legal entanglements.

Even if he does apologize, wouldn't it be a good idea to have on record your official, legal reply to his allegations? What's to stop him from coming back in 5 years and claiming that all these allegations were never disputed by you?

I wouldn't do a thing. I have guns, and I'm the first person they would suspect if the guy had an unfortunate "hunting accident". If your reputation is solid, no amount of investigating is going to hurt you, and once found "innocent" of the charges, you can give an *opinion* that the guy that brought the charges is just angry because he was dismissed due to wrong-doing on his own part that resulted in his termination. It's important that you precede your statement with the words, "In my opinion" to avoid any legal entanglements.

How about an unfortunate gardening accident, maybe ho could accidentally drop his electric hedge trimmer into the ornamental fish pond. No one would suspect you then.

Thanks.
