Hypothetical Question

Say the IT Director of our company is retiring.... What is the best way of angling myself up for Promotion? Im already quite high-profile in the Company for Leading the development of a key online project and work with some key directors already... There are other people in the department (Mostly been there longer than me but I would neccessarily said they have more experience or ability) that are going to start manouvering themselves to be his replacement.. I Already have good connections with 2 key decision making directors in the business.. Just would love to be given the opportunity to give it a go as I feel I have some ideas that could make a real difference Any Ideas?

Be totally useless, shout at other people a lot, turn up to meetings and sleep in them and book yourself on business trips to exotic locations. Seems to work in my company... ;P
Almost, but not quite, entirely unlike... me...

With the job market as it is, I'm wondering why you are wondering.

OK, fair enough. I'm wondering because I turned down at least 4 consulting jobs this month so far and it's been that way all year. I've decided to finish my degree and will keep the current half-time consulting load so I can stay sane. With the job market like that, I certainly wouldn't work on anything I didn't want to nor where I wasn't appreciated for my qualifications.
