I thought the subject was a perfect opportunity for a little subtelty.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

I used to love MASH. When they showed it here in the UK, BBC2 did it as a drama, and removed the laughter track. Played straight like that it was a marvellous piece of TV, Dark, Satirical, with pathos and highlighting the futility of war, and lightened by some gentle humour. Shown in the USian way, ie with canned laughter, it sucked like a Thai ladyboy in a Bangkok hotel. Why did the USians need a laughter track? I know when something is funny, I do not need to be told. I cannot watch it with the laughter track, it is totally ruined.

I read that this morning, very sad. But at least he had a long life; 96 IIRC. As a matter of respect, I shall watch Season 4 forth-with. I have the whole 250 hours plus of M*A*S*H on DVD and it has taken a year to get near to the end of Season 3; watching an episode sporadically at the weekends when time allows. Potter arrives early in Season 4.

The laughter track was a point of much contention. The producers wanted it to be a Comedy Drama, with the humour coming out of the situation rather than the classic write the situation for the joke. Originally they did not want the laughter track and tried hard to keep it out. Interestingly, there is no canned laughter in the theatre scenes. The medical consultants successfully argued that field surgery is really like that, the surgeons were under such pressure that they only survived through gallows humour.

Now I understand why I never liked it, and never understood why some people were so hot about it.
