According to Auntie this morning, some researchers in Sweden have suggested that eating two rashers of bacon a day can increase your risk of pancreatic cancer by 20%. Really? Are these researchers prepared to go to a UK building site and tell the construction workers that they are going to die? The british building industry is not based on the solidity of the foundations or the quality of the rebar or the sweat carrying bricks and cement - though those are important. It's greatest triumph is that all of those and more are based on the solid foundations of a good, honest bacon sandwich. Bacon will always triumph. That's the problem with Sweden. They don't eat bacon sandwiches. If they did, they'd be a greater nation than they are now.

The risk for a man to die from cancer are here[^]. For pancreatic cancer the risk is 1.3%. So I'll add 20% to that and the risk is 1.56%. I think I'll stick to BACON!

The vegetarian bacon slices, you can get from Tescos, are actually pretty good and do taste of bacon.

Yes, but they are made from vegetarian pigs... Probably. Unless I just made that up. I will do some extensive research, by eating some of the real bacon I have in the fridge. Back soon...

What they also said was that Pancreatic cancer is one of the rarest forms of cancer (incidence rate stats show the lifetime risk is 1:77 for men and 1:79 for women, as opposed to 1:8 for breast cancer in women, for example) http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats/types/pancreas/incidence/[^] http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats/types/breast/incidence/[^] It's a typical scare story on a slow news day...

I have similar figures [below]. Go on, add 20% to that and the risk is still small.

Why? Pig's back have evolved over millennia to be absolutely delicious. Why settle for a manufactured and artificially flavoured poor imitation?

I wouldn't use a duck for cover. 1) They aren't generally considered bullet proof. 2) If you ignore (1), they aren't really big enough to hide behind, either. Unless you are abnormally small, or have a good supply of obscenely large mallards to hand.

Assuming I have to seek cover for bullets. I was thinking more about old bread and vegetable soup.

The duck would be good with the old bread, yes. The vegetable soup? More of a problem - have you not heard the expression "like water off a ducks' back"?

Google "What does tofu taste of" - even the hardened vegetablists say it has no (or nearly no) flavour of it's own.

I don't actually eat bacon but these stats annoy me ... What they are saying is, if your chance of getting pancreatic cancer was say 0.1%, then if you eat bacon it will be 0.12% (not 20.1%). They quote it in the way that will be most scary. *Rant Over* Anyway, I bet Tofu doesn't increase your risk of getting pancreatic cancer so I'm alright! :-D

If I have to go, pancreatic cancer after lifetime eating bacon sounds like a pretty good deal. :-D

Yeah, sure, fine for you. A little extra estrogen won't do much damage. Tofu-eating guys, on the other hand, could start to look like Marilyn Manson.
