Why outsourcing sucks today
-
I need a new laptop for some offshore meetings that I need to attend next week and our outsourced IT provider have a SLA of a month to deliver it :sigh: It's bad enough that a so called specialist IT company need that long to procure and configure a standard build machine, but what kind of half wit agreed the SLA with them in the first place!

What's SLA ?

Someone who didn't know what it is? :sigh:

How hot was their sales rep? :-D Honestly though a month is a bit much. I could see maybe two weeks or something like that but then again they're probably just ordering the equipment from Dell or some other place and they themselves probably have to wait a month to get the equipment in order to do the build.

It's not just the long SLA that's offensive here, it's the low level of value added over that period of time. Simply buying a computer and putting software on it is a pretty questionable business model... if the client company also runs their internally developer applications in a browser, then there should really be nothing to install anyway. Sure, a developer will need some sort of IDE or compiler, too, but I've never seen an IT department of any sort actually help with that anyway.

You do have managers in your organisation, yes? Some years ago we needed a network router/mux box for our office and offered to buy one from the local store for about £20 and install it ourselves. The boss asked the IT department who refused us permission, went away and ordered (more or less) the same box for over £100 and took three weeks to install it.

Do you remember, a while back, some poster claimed it was life or death? He had no food, and had to pass a coding project, so he wouldn't starve. I think he said he was from Russia. It was removed after I took a screenshot, but I probably left it on my old work computer.
