Freedom in the good old US of A. Now that is an oximoron of note. US citizens must be one of the most controlled societies in the world. You have a government that rules it's citizens by installing fear. "Oooooohhhhh, be carefull Joe Public, there are muslim extreemists around every corner that are trying to blow you to smithereens. Watch out for the communists they want to nuke our arses, etc I mean you have laws that allows your government to detain any person for as long as they wish, without due process. In California you have laws that prevent you from having a cigarette in your own house. There are many more examples. This does not sound like the land of the free, it sounds more like the land of the oppressed that think that they are free.

I think not. There are several dictators and religious countries that make ours look "free". However I do agree that we are not as free as we once were.

And the first president post Obama should use that new found power to lock up all those who voted it in. Including Obama. That would be a nice example of why that kind of power should not exist. The rest of what you are describing is more of a social problem. One of the *freedoms* with our democracy is that if enough stupid people agree on something it can become the law of the land. Freely selected and imposed oppression. meh :~

Freedom is what you make of it. I feel perfectly free to do pretty much whatever I want. Perhaps it's that what I want to do is, to most people, probably quite mundane and boring (and on par with the vast majority of other drones) but it suits me. Perhaps freedom means more to you becuase you can't do whatever is was you wanted to so you feel constrained and repelled by the current laws. As an example I have no problem with a law that stops people smoking as I don't. However, I can see where it would certainly annoy a smoker. Unfortunately in any counry with a diverse population some will feel that they are being oppressed for the freedom of others. Not fair, perhaps, but then who said life was fair? ps take a 5: not sure why you would be downvoted for expressing an opinion: bit ironic given the subject. :-)

Maybe not as free as we "remember". But memory is selective. Think about the McCarthy era in the fifties. There seems to be some backlashes at the moment, especially on the digital front, but in general I would say that the freedom is at the high point during this lifetime.

A stupid person would never make it to become a dictator. A mean, egoistic, evil psychopath that couldn't care less, on the other hand...

Maybe not as free as we "remember". But memory is selective. Think about the McCarthy era in the fifties. There seems to be some backlashes at the moment, especially on the digital front, but in general I would say that the freedom is at the high point during this lifetime.

I was thinking about the crack down on freedom of speach, freedom of travel, freedom of health insurance.... During my lifetime I have seen air travel go from walk on to strip search, the boarder crosing from USA to Canada go from a quarter to "passport please" to name two. Yes the McCarthy era was bad but it passed. The current restrictions I do not see ending any time soon. Oh, do not say we have freedom of speach as this has been discussed before, when we cannot pray where we want, cannot express our opinion on lifestyles in a public forum, I see that as not having free speach.

If only closed minds would come with closed mouths. Ego non sum semper iustus tamen Ego sum nunquam nefas!

You can get free pepperspray in your face. Did you know that in China your family has to pay for the bullets used in your execution? If they decide to kill you in the US, they do it free of charge!
