Why the limit on the number of viewable pages?
-
Just tried to view the new entries in the Algorithms forum. I didn't find anything marked new, and even checked all 3 available pages. Nothing new, yet the forum name was highlighted indicating something was new. Why was nothing marked new? Why only 3 pages (of 25 lines)? I know that there are many more posts than that. Has Chris decided to delete all forum posts older than 3 to 5 days? Dave.

No posts are deleted like that. There's an orange bar acrossed the top of the threads. On the right of that, you can set the number of posts you want to see as well as how far back you want to go, all the way to All posts in the forum. Set what you want, then click the Update button.

Dave KreskowiakDave, Thank you for your response. I don't remember changing this, but somehow it got set to 3 months. I change it back to all and then could see many, many pages. That solves the 3 pages problem, but the "new" problem remains. The Algorithms forum is still highlighted and I have examined 20 pages and have not found any new posts. Oh, well! It will probably disappear (the highlight) in two or three days. Dave.

People can post replies to very very old messages. Filter to messages posted in the last week and you'll see the latest posts. Also, if the forum is still bolded on the left menu, it can mean 1 of 2 things: 1) a new message was posted 2) you are currently viewing that forum.

Thank you for the info about the highlighting. I never noticed that the Forum became bolded if you went there, I usually don't go there unless it is bolded when I log on. I went back again and checked for 20 pages (back to a year ago) and did not find any post in this month (Feb). I was relatively sure that I had been here at least once this month. I know that I had seen Bill Woodruff's reply on 27 Jan. And I know that the forum was highlighted when I logged on today. Who knows what happened! Dave.

one more bit of info: you never get the "new" icon for your own messages, so if you are the only person having added a meesage to a forum, especially to an older thread, it may be not be so easy to find for you. IMO they should show "new" for all new messages, possibly using a different color for your own messages. :)

It doesn't sound to me like you're choosing a forum that's likely to be a hotbed of activity to get your data from. Have you tried some other forums to see how they behave ? I'm very doubtful that anyone would bother to put 'special' behaviour in a lesser used forum to make it different to the others.

Luc, I do not believe this to be the case. I logged on and Algorithms was highlighted, I haven't made any posts since about 17 Jan, and the notation indicated that the forums that were highlighted had new entries since 1 Feb. I searched back for a year and found no new entries. Good to know information though, thanks. Dave.

Christian, I am primarily a MASM coder, so do not frequent many of the other coding forumns. I like to see the Algorithms, and of course, the happy banter here in the lounge. Dave.
