this cartoon[^] to both my pointy haired bosses. I wanted to take a 17 day vacation... The bosses started wailing that that's too long, especially when we have so much to do... The 17 vacation days are from last year when you two have been singing the same song all along... I think the next piece of paper I will give them should not be about vacation...

    I'm invincible, I can't be vinced

Just 17 days? Is that 17 days in total or 17 working days? I had 10 weeks of paid leave last year not including paid sick leave. I reckon you should tell them you're taking a very long vacation from their employment.

17 working days and it would be even more if I had not insisted on visiting my family over christmas. Together with what I get this year that would be 47 days, a little over nine weeks. The problem is that now (as always) is a very bad time to take any of it. Before we have sorted that out it will be summer and everybody will be taking some weeks off. Obviously also a very bad time. By autumn there will without doubt still be something very important to and I already see myself arguing over what I will do over christmas again. After all, we always have to prepare important things for the next year, so december is also a very bad time. It has been that way every year, only this time they apparently think they can play that game indefinitely. Some time next week they are going to tell me that they can't let me go. I already know their excuse this time but still pretend to suspect nothing. They don't know it yet, but this is their last chance to stop treating me like a fool.

Is this the end result of economic down sizing? you get such a lean men engineering team that it hurts when a person takes a well deserved break... instead the "management" could realise this and employee more staff

No, certainly not. They have been constantly hiring in the last few years and are currently looking for a whole load of developers. The problem is that they can't make up their mind in which direction they want to go. We have teams for and against everything, but all of them are too small to tackle anything bigger. And by the time a team has settled on conventions, processes and perhaps some architechture, then it's time for our bosses to move on to trying out something else. Last year they threw together a team for a Java project. We had no Java developers, so everybody and his dog got a two week introductory course in Java and then they were expected to deliver their projects in four months. That deadline was set in stone, or else. At the moment it looks like the next big thing is something mobile. Up to now we have no developers with much experience with Apple, so it's only a matter of time until some poor guys get their introductory course and then are expected to produce great things in no time. This, of course, is also the reason for my situation. I have the great choice between staying with yesterday's great thing without any hope to get anything like support or resources, or I can keep on hopping to yet another great idea. Perhaps it's just the right time to move on.
