    Really cold water? Quite a while. Don't think it was too chilly in Portsmouth on 10th March last year though.

    Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

      On a mild Spring afternoon on the south coast of England?

          March can be pretty freaking cold in the UK, especially in inland lakes. I remember SCUBA diving once off Torquay in March, when its about as cold as it gets, and christ was it cold. Real head clamp brain numbing time to the point that you cant actually think straight.

          ============================== Nothing to say.

              They didn't talk a policeman out of rescuing the man, they talked him out of retrieving his body. And retrieving a body is not an emergency. Apart from that you got it all right.

              They didn't know if he was dead or not, so yes, they did not try to rescue him.

                I know they didn't try to rescue him. However, based on the bloke not moving and being told he'd been in there for at least ten minutes they decided it was no longer a rescue but a body retrieval operation. Of course no-one except a doctor is allowed to tell anyone they're dead, no matter how obvious it is.

                  Firemen refused to go in 3ft-deep lak as man floated face down[^] And they even talked a policeman out of rescuing the man. What is more useless than an emergency force that cant respond to an emergency?

                    I am sure you meant this Rhetorically, but what the hay ;P An emergency force that responds only to non emergencies! Office workers stroll outside for lunch smokey. As the first worker sticks a cig in his mouth and lights his lighter some alarms go off. The group ofcourse is somewhat confused with all the sounds etc. After a short while a large red fire truck rolls around the corner with a firemen standing on the top ready to use the large water gun. Before the workers can scramble "PSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Fireman in shotgun waves out the window at the now soaked workers with a look of pride. Young lad down the street sees this and says to his friend, "Ya know someday I am gonna be a fireman. And I will be damned if I am ever going to let my mother cook again"
