During the week I work 10 hour days with 3 hours commute. Ussually get home and have to crash for an hour or two, then up, then maybe 5 hours sleep. Then its up at 6 am to catch the train.

You mean three hours each way, or three hours total?

Total of 3 hours. Faster getting to work, get train (Max) at about 6:20, get to Hillsboro about 7:20, then get company shuttle to work, and get in about 7:30. Unfortunately at night cannot guarentee when I can catch a train back (shuttle sometimes misses the train, and then have to wait).

Related to the 8 hour post below. How long do you sleep? Is it by choice? Do you sleep in on weekends? Me, about 5-6 hours, 8-10 on weekends depending on hangover.

I'd hate that unless I could read/write/browse/listen as desired all the way, both ways.

Ideally I need 8 hours of sleep at night, that way I feel rested and refreshed all week, if I keep 8 hour sleep regimen, it also means that I do not really feel the need to sleep in on weekends, I just wake up after 8 hours naturally without any alarm. Now that's ideally, in real life, I usually get 7 hours of sleep on weekdays, and about 9 hours on weekends. Less ideal, I don't feel as rested on the weekdays, but still acceptable. If I get less than 7 hours of sleep on weekdays it quickly goes downhill from there, I feel really crappy and cranky during the week, I sleep in for 10 hours on weekends, I do not want to go out, I do not want to do anything except hug the couch all day long, and then when Monday comes I usually still feel tired. Basically my life goes to hell. So I try to get at least 7 hours of sleep because that's what it takes for me to function normally. I try to get 8 hours, but it doesn't always happen because waking up at 6 means being sound asleep at 8pm (22:00 for the old, yet more progressive, world people). I really need to make a habit of sleeping for 8 hours.

Before I had kids I actually slept less more often oddly. I would stay up late even on work nights playing games or diggin around on the net. Sometimes past 2AM and I would then somehow end up in my chair at work by 8AM. I could manage because if I was exauhsted I would take a power nap after work and likely continue the cycle. Now however with kids I am consiously aware that from the time I get up I will not have a moment "to myself" until about 8 or 9 PM. So 10 or 11 rolls around and even if I am not tired or really interested in something I am off to bed to repeat said cycle. The cycle is now so engraved even on weekends when I can get a little me time, my brain says Yeah its Friday night and only 11 PM but

I've been getting around 6-7 recently and don't feel rested when I wake, but had a good run of a few months where I felt rested and was getting 7-8. This is after 20 years of insomnia where I probably averaged 4-6. Diet and getting up routinely at 5AM has made the biggest difference.

I'm doing alright on 5-6, which is good because I don't see any end in sight. There are days I can go to bed at 11pm, but usually I don't get the chance until after midnight or later on most nights (Hey, I don't get to choose stage times, etc). I get up at 6:30-7am and find eating breakfast regularly gets my body and metabolism ready to be up by then and my weight training + sleepy tea allows me to fall asleep within minutes.

Can't sleep or the sheep will beat me. I run on 6-4 hours of sleep. the " more " time is usually when my wife can get me to bring away from what I'm doing. I't usually less though. I like nights, it's comfortable, relaxing, and less distractions compared to day time. Became handy when the kid came, she sleeps like a rock at night.

Usually 7-8 on a weekday, 10-12 on weekends depending on how busy my liver was during the night. Sleeping 12+ hours on weekends used to be normal for me (without drinking), until I got my sleep apnea under control.

I used to get 8-9hrs pretty much ever night. About a year ago wife gave birth to our first child and though I got about 7-8 hours a night, it was interrupted 4-5 times every night for about 359 days (but who's counting right?). I've been getting 8 straight for about 2 weeks, and today happens to be the first day I actually felt rested. Well I did in the morning, I'm dragging now. Maybe another month of decent sleep...

I can't handle interrupted sleep like that. I feel like shit the next day, a year of it would drive me to madness.

I wondered when someone would mention kids, we have 12 month old twins, I don't think I've had more than four hours in a row in the last year. It's not the waking up that kills me it's the waking up to the sound of screaming

Related to the 8 hour post below. How long do you sleep? Is it by choice? Do you sleep in on weekends? Me, about 5-6 hours, 8-10 on weekends depending on hangover.

Probably about 6 but we have small kids who don't like to sleep so usually up at least three times a night. I did manage 20 in 24 hours a few weeks ago but I was pretty sick.
