My reply was directed at Ravel H. Joyce who is accepting documents that historians claim to be from the Romans but won't accept the Bible as a historical document. You are right though, we pick and choose which documents are accurate.

You are pissing into the wind with this one I think. Anything other than an irrational degree of "it's all nonsense" or "it's all strictly true" is just going to be flamed. To be fair, both the irrational positions will flame eachother. This is ~50% of the reason I don't get involved with these discussions. It is amazing how quickly everyone becomes experts on marginalia, comparative textual analysis and theological minutiae, before drawing their conclusions from whatever source that happen to agree with them in the first place. See, I'm doing it now.

I know. I was my own worst enemy here. I normally keep out of these things, but unwisely thought that this was one statement that all sides wouldn't get their knickers in a twist about. How naive of me. Lesson learned though.

Nothing changes, Pete. This is why we don't discuss religion, politics, or personal income in social circles. I, however, have violated this simple rule on numerous occasions here, and will most likely do so again in the near future. :)

There are some really feeble, weak minded people around here none of whom have the courage of their convictions and whose faith is so fragile that it can't withstand a little lambasting. I actualy feel pity for them: imagine being so weak minded. Go ahead, down vote me; like that actually costs me time or money or impacts my life. It's actually worth getting the downvotes - it shows me that I got to you especially when you don't have the nads to say why. Hilarious.

That was the stupidest thing I've ever read. It's wrong to call her an academic - she's a theologian, which is basically the opposite. A real academic would have come to the conclusion that Jesus probably didn't exist.

I doubt a "real" academic would ever come to that "conclusion." They might come to the conclusion that there is no evidence that Jesus existed but that is quite a bit different than what you said.

Myself I believe anyone that wants or needs 'proof' of the basis of christianity is certainly lacking in the tenent that one must accept God of thier own free will. It is trivially simple to explain a lack of historical evidence - because God made it so. Same thing applies to every aspect of the bible.

Just FYI, it wasn't me who downvoted you. I'm with you, couldn't care less about the voting one way or the other (although I did complain once when the nuclear downvote was still around). As for having the courage of ones conviction, I'm with you. For me it's more of a personal behavior and striving to live the way I believe a should. I really couldn't give a rats ass what someone says about my beliefs. Yeah, sometimes things are offensive, but it's still my choice to get offended. Mostly, I find it funny and humorous. Some people get so worked-up about nothing. Mostly I don't like to get involved in these internet discussions because it so often is fruitless. I don't mind talking with someone who will at least be mostly civil. I don't mind the holding-my-nose, condescending, looking down-my-nose, head-held-high attitude either. I think that's kinda funny, too, to be honest. The original story though I think is pretty ridiculous. How could anyone really know such a thing from so long ago?
