I recently converted 700 60 watt incandescent lights to 8 watt dimmable LED lights, cut my power usage down by 80%. My bill went from $2500 per month to $500 per month.

on another note, how do you figure the equivalent wattage for an incandescent light bulb to an LED light bulb?

Yep - in our kitchen at home, I swapped half of the eight off 50W halogen spots to 0.9W LED spot replacements. The light is noticeably bluer, but doesn't seem any dimmer. They weren't cheap to buy at ~$7 each but I've had them in for about 5 years, and they haven't needed changing, which probably a massive money saving on it's own given that the halogens only last about a year. Plus they are cool to touch, which the others definitely aren't! I can't compare savings directly, because the price of our 'leccy keeps on rising...

I work in a fair sized office building. Tons for florecent lights everywhere and computers pretty much left on 24x7. Recently in an effort to go green and save the planet... we turned off the light in the vending machine. A sign was also placed on the machine announcing that we are now saving energy that way. This appears to be the only energy saving effort in the entire building. Well good I guess. Glad to help, my Doritos are now slightly dimmer. :| I'm kinda wondering if the light might have just burned out and a "We're saving the planet" sign is cheaper than a new bulb.

Same here and this always amuses me because I fail to see any use of this policy. The updates can be pushed during the working hours. So I started to turn off my PC after work until I finally got a memo from the infrastructure department that I’m not supposed to turn off the PC, just to restart. I can understand wasting the power, but only if all our electricity is coming from nuclear power plants and renewable sources. But this is not the case, because IIRC apart from France, there is no other industrial country getting most of its electricity in a “green” way. We are stealing from our children.

We're recycling marketing requirements documents as toilet paper. At least that way they get one good use out of the paper.

I paid $38 per bulb, so just shy of $27000. But with savings of about $2000 per month, at todays rates, the payback is about 13 months.

One place I worked did company wide hard drive backups every night. Other than that I can't really think of a reason to leave the machine on.
