My company is itching to develop toward MongoDB and maybe some other NoSQL dbs. I'm probably going to be the administrator. I've read The Little MongoDB book. Thought it was a good introduction. What are your opinions on Mongo, and what kind of experiences have you had that might give me a caution? And what are your opinions of other NoSQL dbs?

I keep on hearing good things about RavenDB, but that could just be marketing ;p

Propose this as a survey, how many of us know what a NoSQL database is (and do we care).

Mongo[^] was a gentle giant, extraordinarily dumb, but fundamentally happy unless crossed. He was a bit rough on livestock, but generally speaking, his direct approach to problem solving is to be admired for its effectiveness and simplicity.

At my old company I experimented with Mongo and Couch, but stuck with SQL due to pressure from above. Now, a year and a half after I left, I heard they are using Cassandra.

Too bad. It sounds like a good tool for specific jobs. I imagine we're going to use it for the wrong jobs based on what I've heard but I'm hopeful that we can sidestep some of the issues. I really think what's driving it here is a desire to not have to deal with sql and with dbas. I'll look at Cassandra. I've got Couch on my list already. The microsofties were in a bit ago and excited about Hadoop.

I did see an article or two in the CP list on Raven. Thanks, I'll do a little digging through the introduction I saw there. It has a cooler name than Mongo, IMO. :)
