because the FBI is now authorized to know everything you do (you americans, that is), librarians have had to come up with some signs to alert library visitors that they should expect to be spied upon. of course, they can't just come right out and tell people this, because that's against the law. so, they've made some interesting workarounds: http://www.librarian.net/technicality.html[^] First they came for the... -c

You have to wonder if this *can* be serious.

the law is real. the FBI can obtain library records (books, internet usage, anything) for anyone, and the library is forbidden to discuss the matter or to even say if the FBI has been there or not. does this make you feel safe? -c

I didn't realize this was new i guess... seem to remember some movie (Seven?) where one of the characters bribed an FBI worker to get this information. *sigh* If i can't believe what i see in the movies, what *can* i believe... :(

one of the big differences now is that no crime needs to have been committed. the FBI only has to say that they suspect a terrorist action is afoot. also, the "patriot" act overrides laws in 48 states that specifically limit this kind of FBI snooping. hmm. here i thought the republicans were all about "states rights". (actually, i didn't. i'm just terribly amused when they claim they are) also note that the definition of "terrorist" isn't just arabs flying airplanes. it would also include WTO protestors, people protesting abortion issues, or anyone else who, in complaining about something damages a person or property. -c

If you're going to post a link proporting to be in the least bit accurate about this, you should avoid pure propaganda sites opperated by an obviously biased individual. try This[^] Or even this[^] for accurate evaluations of the impact of the Patriot act on Libraries. Intelligent discourse is not very well served by "garbage" links like the one you provided, and it only makes you look like someone who believes anything they read on the internet that agrees with their (possibly poorly informed) opinion.:|:| Some ideas are so stupid that only an intellectual could have thought of them - George Orwell

Rob Graham wrote: for accurate evaluations of the impact of the Patriot act on Libraries you're telling me the fucking US Dept of Justice is an unbiased source when it comes to laws that they essentially wrote ?? i read your links (one of them in response to Shog), and neither of them contradict anything i've said, or anything the signmaker is illustrating. -c

David Wulff wrote: Chris Losinger wrote: Librarians are the dirtiest sex beasts alive. I reckon you have read one too many erotic stories David. No matter how much you wish it were true, waiting till almost closing time at the library will not result in the prim librarian transforming herself into a ravishing, lusty, sex demon. Not even if she catches you reading Don Quixote. ;) p.s. I just noted because of your sigs IFrame trick one cannot quote text from it.

Paul Watson wrote: No matter how much you wish it were true, waiting till almost closing time at the library will not result in the prim librarian transforming herself into a ravishing, lusty, sex demon Oh? Is that really what you think? I would have thought the presense of all those private cubicals in public libraries would have been a good indication of their true purpose, not to mention the baby wipes next to the photocopiers or the "bean bag rooms"... Libraries are the cornerstone of the British sex industry - they even issue membership cards with your preferences on to save time and let you take away books so you have an excuse to tell the wife when you keep going back every week. I thought this was common knowledge? :suss:

Yeah that is good I suppose - those four corner hats leave terrible scratches around your navel and nobody likes the smell of Detox in the morning...
