What music do you listen to when you are coding? Or, do you not listen to any at all? I like trance, something that has a consistent beat but usually no words. The constant beat seems to keep my mind focused.

Maybe it's just me, but it constantly surprises me that people seem to have such narrow tastes in music. I like music. I listen to almost anything - some I like, some I don't. if I don't like it I hit skip, change radio stations or whatever. When I am head-down bum-up coding in an office environment (i.e. with noise) I tend to go for something without lyrics just to keep out distractions. But when I am coding alone at home, anything goes.

Sorry, I searched but apparently not well enough. Still interesting to see the various responses.

There must be more than these. But these are the ones to which I replied "The Smiths". :-D http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=3185629[^] http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=2837907[^] http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=4021425[^] http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=4140393[^] http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=2700477[^] http://www.codeproject.com/Lounge.aspx?msg=3194502[^]

I love to listen to chicago blues when I write code. Sometimes I do rock (manson, zombie, etc..), but only rarely. When I was in college , I actually couldn't code without it. I did my projects at home because I needed the music. These days I just code in silence. I should start playing the blues again, I really cranked it out when I did.

            If it moves, compile it

I prefer silence, but am forced to listen to white noise to drown out the ambient chatter at my workplace.  My work environment at home is completely quiet. Oddly enough, the only time I can listen to music while I "work" is when I'm retouching old photographs in PShop.  Go figure - must the L/R brain thing. /ravi

I sometimes listen to music with words, sometimes punk'ish/garage, though that's probably just my current phase. For the most part and more consistently, I listen to instrumental: The Dirty Three, Tortoise, Explosions in the Sky, even some Dan Deacon.

When I listen it's mostly hard rock and heavy metal merged with blues and jazz. among the artists are Metallica, ACDC, Rhapsody, Judas Priest, Red Hot Chilipeppers, hooverphonic, Leonard Cohen, Queen, Faith No More, Moby, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, Beastie Boys and a bunch of single songs (instead of albums) and dutch artists...

J.S. Bach Precise, with lots of creativity - just what I need when coding. Mainly orchestral suites or the lute suites on guitar...

What music do you listen to when you are coding? Or, do you not listen to any at all? I like trance, something that has a consistent beat but usually no words. The constant beat seems to keep my mind focused.
