I saw a post in the lounge with a "groovy" reference to 420. I didn't think intelligent people did that? ( calling computer ppl intelligent is another argument) I know many people who do, and some even do in my presence. I don't, and I just took for granted that my [computer science] peers didn't either. Views?

    If it moves, compile it

Really? Very naive. I know plenty of intelligent people without an ounce of common sense, they can't even change a light bulb. Intelligence and addiction are not mutually exclusive: I still know some pretty clever developers that smoke.

I still have to figure out what that post in the lounge was supposed all about. If you have any clue feel free to enlighten me. :^) Cheers!

You'd be surprised, quite surprised. Unfortunately, in the financial industry, I have come across much less recreational drug usage and more, let's say, addiction driven usage. At the Christmas party last year, a broker was fiendishly seeking heroin or oxy, being quite blunt about it, too. My comedian friends prefer pot, financial people coke / opiate derivatives. Maybe it's affordability. I'm in the union of this Venn diagram, yet use neither. My old boss, an engineer, was turned down by the Feds for past drug usage. An old BA talked about how he would get high and watch shark videos (he was in his 40's, married with children). I've heard engineers say that pot helped them with math work in college. Having shaggy hair, I eventually get asked for pot at most jobs.

I know plenty of developers that drink, too. Are people that drink lacking common sense? From an addiction aspect, it's odd to treat smoking pot as any different than drinking just because one is slightly illegal.

I can say that I have done just about everything drug-wise. The only real exceptions are H and Crystal. Dope at college, LSD at Uni, Speed in the Army, Coke and E when I got wealthy enough to afford the good shit. Nowadays, I do none but Beer and Fags.

No, I made 2 statements, the first I pointed out that intelligence does not necessarily denote common sense and the other saying that intelligence and addiction are not mutually exclusive. It may well be that an intelligent person that drinks also has no common sense, but it doesn't always follow. In any case, drinking alcohol is no different from taking any other drug. I'm not bothered about the legal ethics as I think all drugs should be legally available. My point was that just because someone is intelligent doesn't mean they're immune to addiction or stupid behavior and I count myself in that lot as we all, at some time or other, do stupid things.

I'm not saying I didn't do it when I was younger. I've done my share of bland to hardcore stuff, and lots of it. I just grew out of it. I think this might have more to do with different classes and types of people I'm around. I still have friends that I knew when we were all poor (and they still are). I also have middle class friends who are educated about health and what not. I am also around professional fighters and athletes because of my training classes... and they would all look at you like you had something contagious if you smoked pot or did hard core drugs. Most of them do drink casually, but they look cautiously at drinking. They don't say anything outright to the drinkers, but you can tell. I think a mix of all that may have led to my confusion. The middle class people either don't do it (or most likely are better at hiding it) , the athletes don't do those types of drugs, and the people I knew from before pretty much all drink and smoke [mostly more than one substance]. Somehow I just decided in my head that developers/ computer scientists don't smoke.....

I have learned to never assume what people do or don't do for "extra circular" activities. Pot is an easy example that people miss because there is the classic "stoner" and most expect all smokers to be like that. but that is not always the case. The example that really makes it obvious (that people are good at keeping 'seperate lives') is sex acts. The reason being is most people keep their interests in that department well hidden and away from co-workers and even close friends. So why would other activities be any different? People let each other into awareness of said activities if they share an interest in them. The interesting thing is many of these types of activities "detectable" by people of the same circle.

Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

I'm not bothered about the legal ethics as I think all drugs should be legally available. My point was that just because someone is intelligent doesn't mean they're immune to addiction or stupid behavior and I count myself in that lot as we all, at some time or other, do stupid things.

No idea what that means. A beer a day has no relation at all to mainlining heroin. And neither is similar to taking morphine for terminal cancer.

Smart people can be addicts, and he knows some clever coders that "puff the chiba". .... try reading slower, it might help.....

Nit pick much? Obviously he's not talking about a beer a day. Of coarse, we can expect that since you started with "No idea what that means".

Culture. There might be some professions/social gatherings that tend to average more or less but within each category the average is dictated by the culture. I suspect but have no real knowledge that any group with younger people and more oriented towards 'entertaining' (using that very loosely) would tend to have a higher average. Naturally there will be statistical deviations from the average, regardless of where it is established.
