Almost all, perhaps all inkjet prints do this. My daughter's Epson does this. We looked around for an alternative which would print black regardless of the levels of the colors and found exactly none. I had an Epson Inkjet years ago. It was the worse printer I've ever owned. It went through ink like crazy, had slightly inaccurate color (everything had a tad too much red) and if it wasn't used for more than a few days, the ink heads would clog and it would churn through ink cleaning them out. On the other hand, my brother periodically uses an HP inkjet that is twenty years old! My conclusion: inkjets suck. (Let me amend that: whatever printer you are currently using usually sucks. However the HP 2150dn I bought, which my ex-wife now owns, is awesome. My HP 4P was awesome, but now won't stay on. I can't bring myself to throw it away.)

HP 3310 (all-in-one) offers to print black when it doesn't have the color.

      A) The HP 3310 is not new B) I've read lots of complaints that says you can't print when a color cartridge is empty.
