Happiness is a challenge and the belief that you have the ability to meet it.

Adequate sleep. Correct grammar and punctuation. Drivers who use their indicators. Trees. Hitting two successive right notes on my guitar. Watching the sea. Etc., etc., etc.

You missed out the capital letter and the full stop, so yes I am. :(( I feel lousy if I don't have enough sleep. I feel good if I have adequate sleep. Why does that make me sad?

So true about sleep. A white night with a kid screaming means a cranky dev with no safety fuses or pins in the morning. A good 6 hours makes a happy dev :)

Happiness is having others appreciate the work you do, like when the owner of the company smiles when you demonstrate your application. Having someone hear one of my songs and say that’s really cool and inspiring. When my daughter hugs me and says I love you Daddy, and when my Wife reaches over and takes my hand and gives it that gentle squeeze for no reason. Happiness is knowing when things go wrong I’ll get through it a better person as I always have.

Happiness doesn't really have anything to do with being a software engineer, I think ... like any job, this one is a means to an end (i.e. it pays for a house, food, services and then elective entertainment which is what you do to be happier). Happiness is seeing your team win something important, or, better, being a part of a team that wins something. Happiness is coming home after a hard day and your SO is there with sympathy and a cup of tea. It's a rainbow over the mountains after you just got rained on for half an hour getting to the viewpoint. I think it's always transient, it's the little moments that life gives us that are better than the usual. It's not possible to be happy all the time, because it can't be better than usual all the time, and we get accustomed to what's usual – i.e. our everyday life, even for a poor person, is beyond the wildest dreams of medieval lords, but we aren't all ecstatic the whole time. But life throws something at you almost every day that will provide some happiness. That's a bit deep for a coding forum :~
