Does the President's position on gay marriage actually matter though? Does this make it more likely that it will become legal in the US? Is it a federal or state issue?
From what I read, he voiced his personal opinion, but will let the states decide for themselves.

It is a state issue. Just as the legalization of interracial marriage was.
