    The Greeks pretty much set the standard for intelligence. The human brain hasn't changed much so therefore raw intelligence hasn't either (mod any improvements due to education). What has changed in the intervening time is the level of knowledge. The mechanism shows is a level of technical achievement that is beyond its years and beyond anything we have so far found, that is what makes it so surprising. The equivalent would be a future archaeologist discovering a Star-Trek warp drive underneath a copy of today's Times.

    Sort of a cross between Lawrence of Arabia and Dilbert.[^]
