I know there are a number of “solutions” that feature Dashboards available but they all require additional apps or licenses, in short, the cost more money. I’m trying to implement a Dashboard like feature for our users that does not require anything that is not a part of Windows 7/Vista or requires something outside of what a user can get for free with Windows. I’m trying to find a way to give our users (on our intranet) a way to easily monitor our Reporting queue to see where in the queue their report request are. I already have several SQL queries I use to give this info which I run within SQL Server Management Studio. The problem is our users will not all have SQL Studio and even if they did it’s not practical to get them to use it. What I’d like is something like a Windows Sidebar gadget or pop-up that runs on the users system and automatically re-queries the data source (A SQL Server database) on some timer value. The info it would display is limited to basic data types such as Numeric, Date/Time and Text. There would be no media types or pictures or anything complex. Is there anyway to implement something like this in Windows 7/Vista without using some third party software or service? I would have thought by Winders 7 that there would be a way within Windows to display the results of an ODBC compliant data source without resorting to some third party app but maybe there isn’t. I could see many uses for an ODBC/ADO complaint like Dashboard for our user base if there was just a way to do this. Even if it’s a web app that requires a web site on our intranet that would be fine so long as the user doesn’t have to do anything more than maximize/minimize the window/popup. Ideas?

You might want to look at this article[^] by David Auld as a starting point.
