Well, we got our new phones on Friday, and everything was fine until my wife started trying to use the email facilities. This is one of the most difficult to use phones I've experienced. I don't know who came up with it, but it seems like a giant step backwards from v1.5...

It's beyond me how Android has the market share it has while most people who buy one eventually say it sucks. Windows Phone on the other hand has the highest customer satisfaction ratings of all current OS-es, but still struggles in the single digit marketshare zone.

I have a nexus galaxy with 4.0.4 currently. When I got the thing, it really wasn't a huge depature from 2.3.x and I jumped in without any difficulty. At least in my opinion. What really struck me was that my girlfriend tried to use it and hated the interface, how it was set up, and so on. She complained that it did not flow intuitively. She had been using an Android phone for nearly 2 years at that point, albeit one with the HTC sense interface. I am starting to wonder if they let the engineers develop the UI without input from usability people.

Which phone did you get, John? I picked up an HTC Rhyme (Android 2.3.4) over the weekend and it seems to do fine for email, messaging, Skype, hot spot, web and even is usable for Word and Excel viewing in a pinch. I've used mine for both my gmail-based mail account and for my normal webmail. The biggest problems I had were importing my 100+ phone contacts, but I opened up an old gmail account, imported and it synched, so I got them all. Also there was a trick needed to copy files to the USB interface, but I finally figured that out. Verizon also had to setup the hotspot, because of a glitch in their administration stuff, but once I assured them I could move my entire business account to a competitor, that was fixed in just a minute or two.

Seems fine to me on 4.0.4 (then again, I'm using the Gmail app, not the email one, because the only accounts I care enough to check with my phone are all Gmail).

Why would you try to use a telephone for mail? I don't, but my wife does (Samsung Stratosphere), and she always complains about getting notifications about junk mail and Facebook updates. That is pain I will gladly avoid. My RAZR got 4.0.4. last week and my only complaint is that I can't hide apps anymore. Yes, being able to disable some apps is a plus, but there are still apps I want to hide. Oh, it also doesn't seem to use the date format I chose (ISO 8601).

We went from HTC/Android 1.5 to Samsung/Android 4 as well. There's no way to move an email from trash to inbox. There doesn't seem to be a way to forward either. I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with the account (it uses gmail, but it doesn't have a gmail domain). When I hook it directly to my gmail account, it presents me with more icons. She also said she couldn't view an attachment, but since it's an excel spreadsheet, I'm not sure what to tell her. I don't use my phone to monitor email accounts. All of this apparently worked fine on her HTC phone.

The email account she's using is in fact a gmail account, but it doesn't use the gmail.com domain, so for some reason, it will only work in her regular email app.

The email account she's using is in fact a gmail account, but it doesn't use the gmail.com domain, so for some reason, it will only work in her regular email app.

Odd, one of mine is also on a different domain but it works fine. But, I didn't set it up in 4.0, I set it up when it was on 2.3 and it just transferred over when it updated, and I don't remember if I had to jump through any hoops for it to work.

Assuming that you have android 4.0+, all this works for me on my account that uses gmail but doesn't have a gmail domain. As far as viewing an attachment of excel, she can probably grab one of the free office apps, or pay for one. HTC had an office viewer woven into their UI. If the below doesn't work, I'm not sure what to say. Now, one thing to check, is if she is using the gmail app or if she is using the 'email' app. They behave differently and it annoys me greatly, even if you use a gmail account in the email app. To move an email from trash to inbox, 0) Select the item to move (the little checkbox on the left, don't open it) 1) Tap the icon that looks like tags (the 'Labels' icon is a bit odd imo) 2) Select Inbox on the popup dialog. 3) Tap 'OK' 4) Return to and then Refresh Inbox Forwarding an email (if you are in portrait mode) 0) Open email 1) Tap the three vertical dots to open the additional options up. 2) Tap Forward In Landscape mode 0) Open email 1) Tap the arrow pointing to the right that has a couple slashes through it.

She doesn't have the Labels icon when she does that, and Forward isn't in the menu.

Well, we got our new phones on Friday, and everything was fine until my wife started trying to use the email facilities. This is one of the most difficult to use phones I've experienced. I don't know who came up with it, but it seems like a giant step backwards from v1.5...

I finally got my Galaxy S2 updated to ICS last Friday and the two thing I really miss are: The "phone status" widget on the home page that included current % battery remaining is not there anymore and I now have to go to apps / settings / battery - yes, I know there are apps available to give me that info, but most of them seem to be "power save" apps, not "phone current status" apps. The email app that no longer starts up by showing the multiple email accounts with the count of messages (folders view) - it goes directly to the inbox of the inbox selected in options - there doesn't seem to be a way to set a folders view at start up :sigh: I do like the new font that is used, text is much easier to read.

Now that is bizarre. I know it is a silly question, but she is using the GMail app and not the Email one? I would send screenshots of mine just to ensure, but that is a waste of both of our time.
