It is the cruellest trick of nature to not let a dog live as long as a man. I have lost several old dogs over the years and know the pain. Time heals.

Probably. We volunteer for the Austin-based Golden Retriever rescue group, so we can get another Golden pretty much any time we want. We have three other dogs: Moose - a Golden retriever we got as a puppy after we moved to San Antonio. She's real timid, and very clingy. Cash - a medium sized black dog that had been dumped by a local theme park along with a couple of siblings. We had to drug him with doggie valium and crawl about 100 feet through think underbrush to rescue him. We couldn't get the other two pups that were with him, but someone else did. We named him Cash because a) he was black, and b) we found him the day after Johnny Cash died. It seemed appropriate. He's an asshole though - not real friendly to other dogs or other people. June - a black border collie mix a stump where her tail should be. We named her June Carter (after Johnny Cash's wife) in the hopes that Cash would get along with her better. That didn't really happen. It's my turn to name the next dog we get, and I'm leaning towards "Knuckles".

Sorry to read about that John. Condolences to you and the family on the loss of a much-loved family pet. 12 isn't a bad innings for a pooch but you want them to live forever, eh? We have cat-themed cup coasters and one of them says: "No heaven will heaven be, unless my pets are there to welcome me!" Time for you to dig out all the photos of Molly and delight in her memories. :rose:

Yup. The name is important. It has to be something you wouldn't be ashamed shouting. We're planning on getting a lab early on next year (too many holidays and trips away to get one this year), and the kids want to call it Chocolate or Biscuit. Being a bit of a fatty, I don't want to be standing in a park shouting "Come here Chocolate" as it'll just like I'm too lazy to go to the shop to buy some. I'm leaning towards calling it "Blonde with the large norks".

When I got one of my cats from the shelter, he was named Ginger. But I changed it right away - to me, "Ginger" is a lightly dressed and overtattooed lady in a movie of dubious character --- NOT a male cat (or dog for that matter).
