    After more of the ongoing cleanout I found the Spore DVD package that had been completely forgotten about. It's now the must have thing for me to install. While doing so it wanted to install DirectX 9.0c, as I am running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 which includes DirectX 11 I told it to fuuck off. Now the game won't play cause it's whinging it can't find a DirectX 9.0c DLL. Is it fine for me to install the older version of DirectX 9.0c without side effects, or do I need to punch Spore into using DirectX 11?

      I'm wondering about that. DirectX is downward compatible so DirectX 11 hat DirectX 9 included. I have some DirectX 9 games, too, working fine on Windows 7. A bigger problem is 64bit Version. Older Games are often 32bit and it's problematic to run these on 64bit, if you have installed 64bit version of Windows 7.

        It's 32 bit Windows 7 and I'm getting the following error - --------------------------- SporeApp.exe - System Error --------------------------- The program can't start because d3dx9_27.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- I cancelled the installation of DirectX 9.0c, so think that is the problem but don't want to install old versions of software if I don't have too.

            'd3dx9_27.dll' isn't really part of DirectX 9.0c, it is a "DirectX extension library" that was released later. In fact there are lots different versions of d3dx9_*.dll that were released post-Direct 9.0c (and they're all side-by-side installs - if you have a later versions like d3dx9_42.dll already installed, you still need the old one for older games). The DirectX setup coming with Spore is probably a combined setup that installs DirectX 9 (if necessary) + the additional extension libraries.

              No as it advises to run the game and it will automatically find, download and install the patches.

                Thanks, I have C:\Program Files\Thunderbird\d3dx9_43.dll, so it looks like I need to install the DirectX 9.0c off the installation CD.

                  But if it won't run, you have to take matters into your own hands. Or just let the DX9 installer run. It can't hurt*.

                  * In theory.
