Ok here is my problem, I have win xp pro on my laptop and my desktop. I recently bought a home networking kit (I needed 2 network cards for the desktop and this seemed like the cheapest way) The laptop uses a usb eternet adapter (teledat). I used the network connection wizard to set up the network and internet sharing. I have the network up but the laptop cannot connect to the internet. I have looked on the ms knowldge base and found what I thought was the problem. I use what is called a PPoE connection and it said there is some problems with that that could be solved by messing around in the registry or upgrading to sp1. First I messed around in the registry... no luck. So I decided to bite the bullet and install sp1 (crossing my fingures and praying it wouldn't break my windows xp) Still no luck. The laptop can ping the ics (192.168.0.1) and in the status it says it is recieveing packets but I cannot connect to the internet (or ping or surf by ip address) msn messanger will not connect, pop3 and smtp wont work, nntp won't work so what I'm saying is I cannot connect to the internet with any protocol (well I haven't tried gopher yet) I have every firewall down (unchecked the ms one and actually uninstalled norton) I have no clue what could be wrong. Can anyone help or recomed 3rd party software to do it with?

Have you tried changing the MTU on the client PC to 1454 (There's a program to help with this - I think it's called Dr TCP) - XP does what the KB refers to as "Black Hole Routing", and this means that packets above a certain size don't get routed properly. You can prove this by changing the size of the ping packet you use to ping an external IP address with. Ian Darling

Yes I have. Unfourtuneately it didn't work... That's why I installed sp1 (It said in the kb that sp1 fixed this problem. It says it uses mss clamping... but I have no clue how to activate this so I assume it is done automatically :(
