I have a sneaky suspicion that they cut corners here. Your security is very important to us yadda yadda..
All your security are belong to us!

Of course I think that they security measures are excessive. There had been about one hyjacking in the US every decade before 911. The cost of current security measures has to be billions a year. Have to include additional time people have to now wait in line and the cost of the TSA and cost to airlines. That does not include the non-tangables. Hardly cost effective. Now the improved security on airplanes does make sense. Not allow people to congregate in the front, the reinforced door to the cockpit. If you really wanted to be secure, than make sure the cockpit door cannot be opened during flight.

If you put the pilots in suits, then they could survive. But all I talked about was locking down the cockpit during flight. Of course that would mean you probably would want a head in the cockpit (the other option is not very nice), which takes space and weight.

1. Door cannot be opened. 2. There is one and only one communication signal from the rest of the plane to the cock pit which means "Emergency - land at nearest airport" 3. Pilots can exit without going through rest of plane. 4. Pilots do not exit normally without receiving a signal from outside the plane on the ground that indicates it is all clear.

Probably need a little more information besides Emergency. No reason in going to a military base of a medical emergency, but may want to land at a military base if there are armed men aboard. Still having only a single signal may be enough. Could also have cameras (maybe be able to send camera images back to ATC). Maybe allow crew to communicate with ATC, and ATC can then communicate to the cockpit.

Cameras would allow written messages/threats.
Then just allow the ATC to have access to the images. This is getting messy

That is why the only method is a button.
Somebody is going to have to have information to know how to deal with the situation. Obviously if some information is available to those on the groud, then they can control what the flight crew knows. Otherwise what safe option does the fight crew have beside heading out into the ocean for a crash landing to prevent the use of the airplane as a way to deliver poisen gas or some other nasty.
