Listening to the TedX-Brussels livestream I just found out about this. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-57541445/studies-show-fecal-transplants-effectiveness-treating-c-diff-infections/[^] Internal medicine doctors from Sinai Hospital-Johns Hopkins Program turned to a fecal microbiota transplantation, a procedure in which a stool is taken from a healthy person and transplanted into the colon of the infected person. This is NOT how I imagined modern medicine would be like in the 21st century when I grew up. :wtf:

You posted this just in time for lunch... :~

If it makes you feel any less gross, identifying which gut microbes actually need replaced to repair the microbiome and culturing them in the lab is a subject of active research.

(I have not read the article) They probably "clean" the microbiota so that just the "good" things from it will help another.

Indeed, the bacteria that live inside us are as much a defining part of what we are as our very own DNA. I understand the significance of the research, it's just that the proposed therapy sounds 'kind of' crude and disgusting.
