The Soapbox has improved dramatically since the ratings went. Although I'm not particularly keen on the whole 'gun-control' debate at least it is more like how the Soapbox was initially intended to be when it was set-up. The endless juvenile sexual-orientated jokes posted by people after quick points ruined that place. I believe some of serial posters knew the jokes weren't particularly funny, but had got adapt at knowing what type of joke would score highly. Some will tell you the Lounge has improved also, and I agree to a certain extent, but still miss the chance to reward someone for a funny/insightful/thought-provoking post.

Rating in the community related forums was completely nonsensical. I can see why it made some form of sense in the forums, but here there's no real justification for it. My own rating was artificially boosted by the amount of time I spend in the Lounge - the articles and answers are what I really feel proud of doing, and as long as people can tell me how good (or poor) an article is, I'm happy.

I agree. Although I think there should be some form of rating in the Lounge(not only does it help reward people for good posts, it helps as a guide to what posts are worth reading), the actual reward in points value was way to high. I would often get 20+ votes of 24(earning 500 points) for a one sentence throwaway comment. Not fair at all if you think of the hardwork that some people put into articles and the programming forums.

It does get a bit quiet in here at time though, and that is during the week. At weekend there is only the tumbleweed making a noise.

Yeah but there has been a general reduction of traffic here for the past couple of years and your right that has decreased even more since the votings been turned off. I wonder if CP has metrics regarding the activity in the Forums, it would be interesting to see, especially to see the effect of the new layout and the switching off of voting.

Yes I hope the ratings are going to be restored, but I suspect the webmasters are quietly hoping they'll be forgotten about :sigh: They were great to scan threads in the lounge and zero in on the popular ones instead having to look at everything... makes it much more frustrating to have a quick visit to the lounge. Why don't they make it so that everyone has a limited number of votes that you can cast (and new accounts get 0 votes per month for the first year or until X milestone reached - I think stackoverflow have something like this).
