At our company, come 5pm on a Friday a crate of frosty beers is opened up in the main room, does anyone else have this? Definitely the most popular part of the week... We used to go for beers together sometime in my old place, but having them in the office seems a bit unusual ...

I don't like it, it leads to buzzed support responses and code check ins. Plus at 5pm on Friday, I want to go home, not see the assholes I've spent 50+ hours with in the last 5 days for another 30 minutes. A lot of people view it as bonding or opening communication. Why can't that be done during the week? I hate this creeping into my weekend shit, I already have to support my products 24-7 anyway. Many, many years ago (I am reliably informed) they had a bar on site here for the employees. Sadly it is long gone with a culture of healthy living and not drink driving. I proposed they resurrected the idea, to reduce our carbon footprint by getting employees to drink and forcing them onto public transport. Under my scheme you could only be served if you surrendered your car keys.

That would certainly help with understanding the PM.

At my previous job, we used to have beer at the end of the week; most of us were young good looking and cool people (and no kids). We did this to have people from other departments meet up and "mingle" We had about 1 beer per person; just enough to get people together; if we wanted to continue drinking, then we went 1 street away at the beer place. At my current job, no; but we often go out for lunch.

in this sue happy society we have over here, the liability is far to great to do that. "your Honor, if they had not had beer at the office I would not have driven drunk and therefor it is their fault that I am an idiot".. It would happen if it has not already.

Treat stressful situations like a dog, if you can't eat it, play with it or screw it, then just piss on it and walk away. Be careful which toes you step on today, they might be connected to the foot that kicks your butt tomorrow.

Nope, our office is a half-day-Friday every week, so the only person you should find at that time is the security guard. What he gets up to is anyones guess.

I wonder if I disguise this as a request for Chris to give us guidance in selecting Australian wines ...

Most start-ups in Silicon Valley used to do that till the issue of liability (in case an employee crashed into someone else on the way home) came up.
