Recruitment consultants do the strangest things..

I never used a recruitment consultant. What do they actually do? How much do you pay them? Do you pay them each month or when they find you a position?
I don't pay them a thing. the money side of things is purely between the employer and recruiter. if I had to pay, I wouldn't use them. I've had one really impressive recruitment consultant in my 13 years as a developer, the rest have been either totally incompetent or really cutthroat, or a combination of both. you do get a lot of interviews through them though, so they get you access to places you never even knew had jobs going. a necessary evil, I guess.

You don't - the company that employs you in the end gives the company the RC works for a percentage of your annual salary as a fee (this can be a good percentage - I've seen companies ask for 50~100% of salary before now). The RC him/her self is paid by contacts, CV's sent out and introductions - so they want you CV and will send it pretty much anywhere. If this gives you the idea that they are lying pond scum, you aren't far off...you are however missing out the swear words.

I'm not going to be available for contracting until the autumn, and certainly not in the London area. my profile states this clearly in the first section, called "summary". the same section as my phone number he just called me on. so no, I'm not going to be available for an interview in London first thing on monday because I'm not even in the UK, just like my summary says. instead of being cool about it he just said "oh, right, er" and hung up when I summarised my current situation for him on the phone. I get the feeling that a certain recruitment consultant isn't fulfilling his candidate contact metric for the week.
The last one that e-mailed me for my CV got a reply asking him to send me his, because I needed a good laugh.

I find it a total lack of respect when they don't even read your resume. If I found out they didn't make that effort, the recruiter in question starts with 0% chance of placing me somewhere. :~

I know what you're saying. Their entire business model is a numbers game so I can tolerate the fact that they don't always take enough time when they make the very first contact. this latest guy simply put the phone down on me once he'd finally twigged that I wasn't available for the particular position he had, and that's just being a dick.

ha ha, I once held on to a person for about an hour. In about 45 minutes I was letting him now I wasn't interested, but he kept on going for 15 minutes from being friendly to extremely pissed. You can't imagine the satisfaction I felt when he hang up. ;P

Recruitment consultants are no better than dog's turds. They've just turned over to a new accounting year so they're in a rush to try and close some deals brought forward from the last one. I got a flurry of calls and text messages from sockcuckers that I vowed I'd never do business with ever again. They are a disreputable breed. Next time you see a dog having a dump give it a wide berth; it might just be your favourite consultant trying to contact you.

A similar thing happened to me too, about ten years ago. One recruiter wasn't returning my calls so I just took a different job. A couple of weeks into the job he's talking to my line manager in one call trying to place someone, and his next call was straight to my mobile trying to place me somewhere else, even though I told him straight up that he'd just been speaking to my boss who was sitting less than ten feet from me. My boss at the time, being a something of a 'roid user, went absolutely apeshit. I thought he was going to reach down the line and tear the guy's spine out, Mortal Kombat-style.
