What database? SQL Server? MySQL? Oracle?

Being a DBA I have a copy of SQL Server on my desktop. Not the ideal place for a database server. I have SQL memory set to 4G max but something tells me it takes a bit more.

It's not the RAM utilization slowing down your computer, it's the IO operations causing the slowdown. Even your boot will be very slow if you have SQL Server or any other database engine installed.

I love the way computers multi-task. As long as you do one thing at a time.:mad: Running a database restore that is tying up the computer. CPU 3%, system has 8G memory, maximum ever used 6.3G, maxed out. I even had trouble trying to write this.
When this happens to me I try to remove suspected process's affinity from processor one and two, and set the affinity to the applications I am using to just 1 and 2... Regards Amar

Not sure - it takes 15-20 minutes before the logon completes ... hopefully this will work way better on my new machine - which I hope I will actually start using one of these days ;)

What!!!? You actually have all of these installed on your laptop? I thought you are pointing out a possible scenario. :) Don't you have an older desktop/laptop laying around? You have way too much patience... you must be writing some quality code :)

Interesting... I don't know what is you requirement regarding mobility, but I would let everything installed on the older/existing laptop and install the client software on the new shiny HP 8570w and then connect to the older laptop The Database Server (which I would never turn off). :)

Do you need all those engines at startup or only on demand? Maybe just disabling the automatic start of all those greedy databases might improve your boot time? :)

Did that for a while, but lately I need both when I start working - disabling Oracle helped a bit, cutting about 5 minutes of the time required to boot, disabling MS SQL Server didn't make much of a difference. Disabling FSecure made a lot of difference ... but then we're not supposed to do that, so I turned it back on. So FSecure is probably the real culprit, but it behaved well enough before I installed the servers.

Or then just delay the automatic start of the services until you're logged in (e.g. write a short batch script and move it in the autorun folder ;P) so you can in the meantime start more (or less) important things like codeproject (most important ;)) or checking the mailbox Otherwise: Set up WOL an boot the computer from your mobile phone :laugh: (tried this with my pc at home ;))
