Stupid Question
-
Ok, make that two stupid questions because the my subject title made me think of another question ... so here they are, in no particular order :): First off, do you agree that "There is no such thing as a Stupid Question?" In college I learned the lesson that if you didn't understand something and you didn't ask a question things started to get really confusing, really quick ... and a bunch of my professors would use the above phrase to probably help encourage everyone to ask questions. However, after some deep thought and reflection, I would definitely have to disagree and say that Stupid Questions do exist. Anyways, that was really not my original intent of this post. Here is the real stupid question that I had: What is the purpose of rating posts? You know, that little portion of each post in the bottom right-hand corner where it says, "Rate this message: 1 2 3 4 5" and you click on a number ... a little pop-up window appears saying that your vote was recorded. Great! Then what happens? Is the user notified of the vote? Does it go towards your status on CP? I'm just curious as to what this is used for ... can anyone give me further insight?

Newport News, VA, USAActually, there are 5 different ratings, 1 2 3 4 5, but the natives only use 1 or 5. You give 5 if a message pleased you, and 1 if not. 2, 3 and 4 ratings are reserved for future use :) I see dumb people

There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people that ask the same question ten times. dfu23 wrote: What is the purpose of rating posts? The idea was so that people could filter out pointless messages using the Noise Filter thing. This came after a spate of people in the lounge trying to get people to do their college projects for them and such. You'll notice that very highly rated messages show up in red and the very low ones (with three votes or more) show up in grey. The unfortunate thing is that people rate based on the opinion within, not on the quality of the message, so it's still worth reading grey ones and there are still red ones that will irritate you, it's just that the first people to get to them either agree or disagree strongly. Great! Then what happens? You see the drop down near the top right of the forum page that says Noise? That is what the rating is for. Rate a post, then refresh the page and you will see your vote has affected the posts score (if it had no score then your vote is the initial score.) What you can do then with the Noise filter is specify that only posts of a certain value are prominent. Posts that fall below your noise filter level are coloured grey to show you that according to your taste that post is no worth even reading. BTW, nice flag! Well done :-D

Actually, one professor said (and I think I agree) that the only stupid question is one that was just asked. Newport News, VA, USAStupid questions are those that are pointless in the current context. As much as we would like to think there is no such thing as a stupid question, they do exist. "So, if I make a hard left turn in my car, will the solar output of Pluto be reduced?" Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.
