Multi-language documents

Does anyone know of a tool that can help you maintain documents in multiple languages? Or does anyone have any ideas of implementing an easy solution to my problem? Problem: I have documents (Word, PPT, Excel) that need to be written in multiple languages. The contents are the same. They all need to be updated when new information becomes available. It's annoying to have to correct the document in one language, then go to the same document written in a different language and go look for the bit that I just corrected in the other document and make the same correction. It's also hard to ensure that all documents stay synchronized. Any info greatly appreciated.

:confused: But correcting the other document means that you should be familiar with the language, right? Are you looking for something like Google Translate? But then, even that translator (and others) are not 100% accurate.

That's correct. Linguistic skill isn't the problem here. It's the effort of putting information A into document A then putting the same information in document B and C and so forth. I have to rely on my own diligence and memory to remember to fix all documents. If the documents are long, I have to search through each document for the bit I need to correct. The more proficient you are in the languages, the harder it gets to find the relevant sections because you can say the same thing in many different phrases. If it's been a while since you first wrote the documents you may not remember which nomenclature you decided to use.

Some time (by which I mean many, many years) ago this was handled by putting paragraph numbers against each paragraph in a document. So when any change was made to paragraph 7/13 (Chapter 7 para 13) the same paragraph needed to be changed in all translations. Inserts were handled by a decimal as I remember (7/13.1 would be the first paragraph inserted after para 7/13. 7/13.0.1 handled inserting before that or 7/13.1.1 for one inserted after)

We had developed systematic ways to produce and maintain multi-lingual documents. It is very easy to maintain the documens if changes are needed. They are not however based on the formats you listed. And they are not free. It can generate html5 (+css3) (see here here [^] for sample documents), some of them are multi-lingual (it will show documents in available language (of the document) selection of your browser). It is easy to translate them into any languages systematically using our tools. Also the html version is service based (it is called cloud document service). It can also generate WPF flowdocuments (and others, pending implementation), see the documents included inside the product in my signature.Your software product can interact with the document in many ways, like extracting a piece of document out of the document (database) depending on the usage context. I've heard of one called "World Server" which does everything you want but is probably way more (including cost)than you need. If I were going to set something up like that I would have the document parts contained in a database and use the Word customxmlparts and various automation features to alert you to documents that need updating. Thanks for the info. Very interesting but as you correctly point out, a bit beyond what I had in mind. Still, it'd be useful for me to keep in the corner of my mind. We are trying to go global as much as possible after all. :thumbsup:
