US Immigration

That probably makes me one of the very few who have no intentions of going to US. I have been there for 10 days and I liked it. But, I don't know, I am not excited to be there. I would prefer going to Sudan that spending life in US for meager material benefits. (I just made a big comment. I may not be able to fulfill it.)

Well it's easier for guys. Most Indians who came here who hate the idea of ever going back are usually women because of how they get treated there.

Many foreign IT companies (India/China etc.) file H1B Visas but may not necessarily send those employees to the US. It's just a preemptive measure to make sure that if and when a project is live, they can then send these guys right away instead of waiting to get Visas for them.

That does not happen as much now as they have stamped down on that practice - they are more diligent with the criteria, especially pay. BTW, this is the first year for a while that the visas all went in the first week.

I have read laws and guidelines. That's exactly what amazes me. How can so many people be there like forever with these rather strict laws?

I don't get that either, but what really confuses me is how some are able to get a driver's license. I came to the US on an H1-B visa and it took them 18 months from I passed the tests to get around to issue me a license. They gave me a temporary license and I had to extend that several times. BTW, I am still here because I received a Green Card through the Diversity Visa Lottery. I had sent in the application about three years in a row before I moved to the US, then my name was picked in the lottery a few months after I arrived on the H1-B. Soren Madsen

Oh okay. I have not been following these things closely in recent years.

Sorry, I kind of don't get it. Are you referring to gender unbiased behavior here?

I am referring to how women in India have a far lower quality of life and independence compared to men in India. (not referring to crimes against women, just the cultural and social attitude towards women)

I know. It was actually not smooth sailing. The number I received in the Lottery put me in the last group of people to process and I had to hire an immigration lawyer to be in their faces about processing my application before the deadline. In the end I got the approval on one of the very last days before the deadline expired. If it had not come down to the wire like that I would have handled it myself instead of paying $1,000 to the lawyer. Who knows if it really made a difference, but hiring the lawyer seemed like the smartest move. Soren Madsen

I don't know how much of India you have explored, but there are places where this simply does not exist. Of course this does not fit in to life style which people in cities are used to. Even if that was the case, I personally would choose any other country than US. I cannot understand why. I have nothing against US but I just don't want to be there.

Your names forces me to believe you are European. So, if you haven't learnt those rolled up "R" pronunciations, you better learn it.

Pretty much every Indian wife I've met here has told me the same. That they've never been as independent in India as they are here (and these are women who lived in Bombay, Bangalore, New Delhi etc.) Of course some of it is probably just them maturing better and worrying less about what their family thinks about what they do.

Don't worry, I am not coming there to steal jobs. :) I can do that from India. ;) I am interested in knowing affects of recent economic conditions on immigration restrictions. Has it become more stricter or easier to sneak in(legally).

It has always been easy (allegedly) to get in here illegally: ask any of the 12 million plus illegal immigrants currently here. It is very difficult to get here legally to work - read this: Working in the US[^]. To become a permanent resident alien (and hence a citizen) is costly and can take years, presumably why so many people enter illegally and take their chances.
"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." Red Adair. Those who seek perfection will only find imperfection nils illegitimus carborundum me, me, me me, in pictures
It took me 10 years and around $15,000 to come here legally and end up with a Green Card. $3,500 of that was for an extra lawyer to try and persuade the US immigration that when they lost my documentation (which I had all copies and receipts for) that I did not have to start from scratch again as they insisted I should do in the deportation courtroom. The Judge in the court, after hearing the situation from my lawyer, actually gave the immigration people a good telling off and told them to get their act together and expedite correcting the situation in my favour - which they eventually did, still managing to charge me around $800 for a 30-second electronic scan of my fingerprints (bio-identification they called it) even though the original fingerprinting (they had presumably lost) was using ink and paper and only cost $45 even though it took more than 5 minutes. They were also instructed to apologize to me for trying to deport me when the error was entirely their fault and I had followed every rule and paid every fee. I never got that apology, but I did get the Green Card fairly quickly after that. "Land of the Free" - I wonder where that is?
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

That may be state dependent or there may have been another reason it took so long. Our new licenses arrived very quickly. Well done on the DV Lottery - Green Cards are worth their weight in gold pressed latinum.

It is easier! Now it is legal to come through the legal channels or illegally. Oops, forgot, US cannot use the term illegal allien anymore (political agenda)... hmmm, what to call them...? Undocumented residents?

Here in Arizona, we call them "targets." We're not allowed to barbeque them, else we'd call 'em "carnitas."

Interesting. I don't care about moving there. I just need a US passport to get rid of these visa hassles.

A little wig on my head would make it go down by 20. Rest I can manage with my slender figure. Great, we are talking about illegal sneak in on interwebs. Now what was that agency (or whatever) that knows every breath you take in US?
